Title: Help with coil getting hot, motor wont fir
Post by imracin68j on 06/13/09 at 10:02pm

Took my boat out and it has a points ignition.  Everything was running great then everything just shut down.  The coil is blazing hot.  Any ideas?

i dont know crap about fords... but a friend of mine has a 71 mustang with a 351 in it... it had points in it, but he switched it over to electronic... Its not HEI, but im sure they make those parts to... he got all his parts from year one and summit...

Pertronix electronic conversion kit. They get rid of the pionts and still fit in your stock dist. There only like 80.00  at any napa i  think.

Use the Ford dura spark box and dist. Very easy to wire and can be found in any junk yard cheap. It came on everything from the mid 80's to '95. It could also just be a bad coil.

You're right, it was just a bad coil.

i had a old ford truck that coil would go out every few weeks and when it did it would sometimes burn up the pionts after several coils and sets of pionts i figured out the problem the ballast restor wasnt working properly replaced the ballist resitor never had a pionts or coil problem  agian but reccomend the after market ignitor set up had to put one in a 73 pantera with a 351 it worked great

That's why I like the Dura Spark system. It's really a maintenance free system.

get a points eliminator kit. converts a points style ign to electronic. put one on my falcon and it runs sweet.  fits inside the stock distributor, and i never have to mess with points again

this is the kit?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ACCEL-POINTS-ELIMINATOR-KIT-57-74-FORD-V8-2020_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c72Q3a1546Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem48364c120fQQitemZ310148600335QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1190wt_976

The motor is a ford 351.  Are the points distributers all universal for ford?  An HEI won't fit on this motor as the rotor won't fit by a longshot.  It will hit the intake and a few other things.  Would I just run the two wires into this unit.  I will asume I bypass the resister.

that will do the job stay away from the dura spark sysre you gotta run a seprate box and coil and i have had to replace several boxes as like the sytem i replaced in the pantera so go this way youlll be happy no restor as long as your coil is a non resistor type

DUI makes ford and chrysler distributors with all GM HEI parts.

Just drop it in and hook up the hot wire

do I still need a coil?  Or does this unit toss everything else out?  I just  pull the electronics out of the points and put this in and fire it.  black wire orange wire direct in?

It is exactly like a GM HEI, just fits a FORD.

Right down to the cap, coil, rotor

plug and play

Hey Billy go to napa and have them order a ignitor ignition for it .you dont change the dist but you get the electronic ignition.just have to remove the points breaker plate and set electronic like the pionts and no dist problems.
