Title: Oil loss out breather.
Post by slidinbmw on 07/14/09 at 10:09am

What would cause a big oil loss out breather on a 4 banger.  The 33 car had to leave the race after the lights came back on at SMS.  Never had a problem losing oil before.  He lost about 1 1/2 quarts.  Came on all of a sudden about lap 15.  Any ideas?

i was having a simular problume with my old S/S... it was building up so much pressure in the motor that it kept blowing all the oil out thru the breathers... i ended up stuffing rags in the valve cover breathers to get it to stop... but i was told that the pressure was building up becuase the rings were going bad... so i guess i should of rebuilt the bottom end instead of stuffing rags in it... that motor ended up blowing up...lol...

I had problems with lots of oil coming out of the breathers on the valve cover (not a quart and a half though).  My problem turned out to be broken top compression rings in a couple of cylinders.  The second compression rings and oil control rings were fine.

it never smoked out of the exhaust and ran okay as long as I could keep the oil from getting on the air cleaner.

Hope that helps.

Good suggestions.  I'll let Rob know to check thoes rings.

Compression leaking into the oil pan.

Last time it happened to me it was a hole in a piston.

Blew the dipstick out and covered the engine with oil VERY quickly.

will bad rings cause oil to go out the dip stick tube also in a daily driver?

A bad pcv valve will also cause it on a daily driver

If there is already substantial blow by already, you're right. It's still related to a worn out lower end.

inline 6 (200 cid) out of a 65 anchero, put a new gasket set on it because it had been leaking oil for a while and had been neglected. put it back in took it for a drive and got back and it had been blowing oil out the dip stick tube. didnt do it before it was reassembled, so i dont know for sure? i was thinking though it was probably cause of compression leaking past the rings into the crankcase?

The only way to know is with a leak down but it is undoubtedly worn out rings.  I get alot of oil coming out of mine from time to time.  Sometimes you just need to raise the breather up a little.  Is smoke pouring out of the breather?  I wouldn't worry about it unless your seeing lots of oil on the plugs.  If that's the case you need to worry about the oil detinating the engine which can cause breakage.

woullda done a compression testt but couldnt find the right adaptor, and as a result couldnt do a leak down test. drove it around anyway, and it hasnt done it since. got to thinkin (which is sometimes dangerous LOL ::)   ) that one of the passage ways to let the crankcase breathe was partially clogged with carbon & i hope thats all it was  :-?
