32 late models in the house and this place is rocking, the clay is very dark and extremly tacky, we are hot lapping right now.
also running the spec sprint and mini 4s.
it is going to be in the low 50s and no rain to be seen.
Tom Malcom and Dino are the fastest cars out so far at 16.014 @84 mph.
they have a 10 pm curfew here so the show will run fast.

we will try to do our best at updates pet pits internet is down and Im on phone internet.line up to follow soon

that adobe clay is awesome. you think the tracks fast now, just wait til the tide rolls in. its gonna pick up.
heck, the first time i went in 05 to see the now defunct Western Dirt Late Model Tour, they also run 5 other classes. 360 sprints (winged, its their local class), modifieds, super stocks, pure stocks and mini stocks. kinda sucks with the 10pm curfew, but they got it done. track was bad fast all night, and the walls were black as could be in all the turns. petaluma is just badass!!! if you have never gone, you should. i made it up for the civil war sprints and it was killer (along with the NHRA in sonoma that weekend. )

nice  to see 32 late models also

thanks for the updates, and hope you all get a good FAST race

it's cold and the track is still tacky and NO dust all night long. in fact it looks like hot laps at most places becasue they are still slinging alot of mud here.

Thanks Ray for the help.  Awesome to know when you're clueless, there's a guy you know that can help a brother out in a pinch.  Seems that we wanted to use our own lineup procedures and everybody else was set on WAS lineups, so we had to wing it when it became a problem.  No biggie on the change, but I had no clue.  From the pits to the booth it was "the lineups need to be like this", but Ray jumped in and helped explain things and got us on the right track.  Thanks again.  Also great to see Old School #6 and Camaroluvr as well.  LMR is lucky to have some genuine good people as members.

As far as racing goes, Decker had them covered from the drop of the green.  Arnold and Shafer closed in when lappers came up, but could never show the 84 a fender as he pretty much checked out.

The 31 car turnout was awesome as well.  Thanks again to the sponsors that stepped up, Finish Line Towing, Sayf Tee Bar Inc., and M. Maselli and Sons along with BRC Race Cars and Bay Area Hose and Fittings.  Also thanks to the guys making the long tow North, and a big Congratulations to Jeff Decker for his back to back Maselli Classic wins.  Hope you all had a good time.

Ron

Indeed.  While waiting for the B to hit the track, there was a lull in the action and someone turned around and said "Better get the show going..It's raining."  I laughed and said to my wife, "That's not rain, that's gofast."

The fog came rolling in....truly an old school Petaluma Speedway was on hand last night.

On behalf of myself and chevcamarolvr I would like to say it was a pleasure to meet Ron (PetalumaPits).  It's always nice to meet people from other areas with the same interests, and I might add he does a great job up in the booth.  This was our first time to Petaluma, we had a good time, and will most likely be back some time in the future.........................Kirk & Sara.

Thanks to everyone at Petaluma for a great time! That track kicked our rear...Never saw such a hooked up track! Heck, it makes a hooked up SMS look a little slick. We could not get the car to turn till we put so much rear steer bar angle in it...LOL!   Was that a normal crowd for Petaluma? For such a "big show" the crowd was terrible IMHO....

We're smack dab in the middle of Sprint Car Country up here, and the Gold Cup was going on in Chico at the same time.  The Maselli is usually this upcoming weekend to avoid the conflict, but the schedule was changed....bah, nevermind.  The fact that there was a huge sprint car race going on in Northern California pretty much put the kibosh on attendance.

This week, the traveling 360 Civil War (Sprint Car) Series will be here and I'd bet the stands will have over 1,100 in attendance to watch the stab and steer guys.  It's just the lay of the land.

Obviously, we had a fantastic time.   :)

But I did want to thank Jim Soares and Petaluma Speedway for putting on such a great event.  The BBQ and beer for the people in the pits after the races is such a nice thing to do as well, and is greatly appreciated.  We have big, hungry guys on our crew!

As for the light attendance in the stands, all I have to say is they missed a heck of a race.  31 late models is a large count in California and every one of them came out there to win.  We haven't been at an event this exciting in a long time.

Also, thanks Ron for all the promoting you do.  I know for a fact that a lot of those guys showed up because you made sure that they all knew about this race.  That really says something for how passionate you are about the sport.

We will be back for next year's Maselli for SURE.

I would like to say a big thank you to Ron and his wife for having me up in the booth with them. Even when we had the little mishap with rules. It seemed the WAS guys all wanted WAS format and it was a good thing it got changed, becasue the invert was 6 and to put Shonnon or Decker back that far with as fast as there cars were wouldn't of been a good thing.

This was our first time to the speedyway and we will be going back, intertesting drivers meeting to say the least, first off every one must have a trap under there car, curfew at 10pm, no motor cycles in pits, only golf cart or quad with push bar must be used to push.
The clay in this place is very heavy and dark, it was still on my shoes the next morning, at lap 35 they were still slinging mud in turn 1 like it was hop laps. The weather was strange for us, here it is 100% when we leave Fresno and we get there, and it's over cast with a hevey mist and fog rolling in.

Title: Re: The Official Maselli Thread
Post by smart_guy on 09/14/09 at 10:50pm

man its always good to see the fast guys have to work from mid pack. makes it fun when two guys like drake and kirby have to start mid pack, because they drive like madmen to get to the front.

tarp under the car is imposed by the county, and so is the 10pm curfew. gotta love that adobe clay. only about 30 miles from the bay really helps. track prep there is no issue. makes santa maria look dry slick!!! track just gets faster as the night goes on and they just keep slingin clay. petaluma is just AWESOME!!!

Title: Re: The Official Maselli Thread
Post by Ian on 09/14/09 at 10:59pm

I always loved that track! you know it's good clay when it's NATURAL! no truck loads being brought in there.... the pits are black clay, the infield is black clay, and the track is, you guessed it, black clay!

when we were there before, a tarp was only required for local drivers. Luckily, we had a tarp and a big chunk of astro turf! LOL

Can't wait for next year's Maselli!

Dude, you were coming up into the booth if we had to use a rope and handcuffs to get you up there.  I'll be the first to admit that I had no clue as to the WAS lineup procedures.  The original lineups sent down were based on our lineup procedures.  Believe me, it was no big deal to change, as long as the majority of racers wanted it that way being it was a special show, but when the people making the lineups are 1) scoring the rest of the 3 division show 2) learning the new procedures 3) dealing with lineups during yellows 4) fielding calls over the radio as to "Are the lineups done yet?", it gets hairy up there.  Again, you saved our collective a$$es with the explanation and examples.  After seeing those procedures for the first time in actual use, I like them.  It allows the fast guys in qualifying to "back up" that time in the heats, and the dash lines 'em up for the main.

how is the other crate car doing after that big smack with the 28g?
Duane the 6 crate car was bad fast there, sounded loud but back it up with fast times.

Ron you can thank Chris K. for the format, he said why penalize guys that came to win the race not wreak there cars, and if your fast you will make it to the front, just ask Rob Sanders and nick Bartels both coming out of the B and making it to the front, Rob even got sent to the rear in the main and came back again.

That was a hard hit, broke the frame in two places. The damage has already been repaired just waiting for a right side header. Hope the 28g wasnt hurt too bad.
Duane the 6 car started 10th moved up to 8th then slipped back to 11th and finished the race one lap down.
