Title: DO THE MATH
Post by OLD SCHOOL#6 on 02/28/10 at 4:52pm

A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of gas a year.

A vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles so that's 224 million gallons saved per year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.
5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption.

More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350 million dollars. So, the government paid $3 Billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million.

We spent $8.57 for every dollar we saved.

I'm pretty sure they will do a great job with our health care, though.

so if you had a PAID FOR car that got 15 mpg and you drove 12,000  miles a year @ 3.00 a gallon you spent about 200 a month on gas

Just what you paid for USE/SALES tax on your NEW CAR would have bought you HOW MANY GALLONS OF GAS??

Plus you have a MUCH HIGHER License Fee annually now with the NEW CAR, INSURANCE is MORE MONEY...but you are going to SAVE 80 bucks a month on gas if you now get 25 mpg        LOL

...and people wonder why AMERICANS are broke

I heard a lot of stories about this deal, not sure how true they were.......

One was that the car dealers were put on the hook for a lot of cash and were having one he!! of a time getting the money out of the Gov......

Another was that these "clunkers" were being washed up and put right back on the used car lots and are back on the streets again .............

TAX DOLLARS AT WORK ------- DON'T 'YA JUST LOVE IT........ ???  :D :(

Kirk,

A lot of the cars that were taken in by dealerships in trade didn't meet the criteria for the CASH FOR CLUNKERS program, but the dealerships made it APPEAR that the customer was getting the GOVT deal.  If a car didn't qualify, there was no reason it couldn't be re-sold.  (I know a couple guys who were pissed to see their CARS in a local lot - and I said WTF do you care!  They gave you your FULL $$$.

The money from what I was told was VERY SLOW in coming to the dealerships from the GOVT - and they had to jump through major hoops to get it (LOTS OF PAPERWORK)  -- I was also told, if some of the dealerships would have known what was involved, and how long it was going to take - they would have NOT participated.
