Title: Overheating question
Post by 17t_racer on 04/06/10 at 8:10pm

Does anyone know how to keep an engine for getting hot. The last race I raced it was 50 outside and the motor was running 235! That is a little warm for me. I have a brand new double pass radiator in the thing and we have good airflow thru the radiator! You can IM me if you want!
Thanks
Bryan Terry 17t Hobby Stock

Water pump?  You running a thermostat or a restrictor?  If running a thermostat it might be stuck and not opening up when it should.

hey a few things, 5/8 restirctor, you do not need a thermostat in a hobby....run an external overflow tank for the radiator and fill it from there... always fill radiator from highest point... also check your plugs, you may be running lean and need to fatten her up... running lean will make you run hot.  how good is your fan shroud? your fan should be half way in your shroud.  pop rivit a piece of plastic directly under the radiator hanging down, it will grab some air and force it up.  these are all some of the things i did when running a hobby, and it worked...

one more thing, make sure you have enough holes cut into your nose piece... dont run the plastic fans, they suck, the 4 blade fan is the best...

last but not least, the best thing on the market for cooling is called  "30 bellow" you can usually get it at pep boys, if they dont have it, i know paul williams at pws machine has it... it is bad ass stuff! you just put it in your radiator like water wetter but way way way way better

what size are your pullies? might be spining to fast or not fast enough. i run the 7" wp pulley and the 30% reduction on the crank. has always work good for me. buddy rob got the same pullies and it was getting hot. he went to 1 to 1 that helped him.

The pulleys I think are a reduction set! I will check all the other items listed from this post. Thanks for helping!

Make sure your fan is on correctly. Not backwards. It happens often. chet

Is this a new motor, or is it at least a block you've run before?

Yeah it is a block that I have run before. It was checked for cracks as well! We are not loosing any water out of the thing!

Did you have it re-bored? If so, what size, .030, .040, .060 over?
