Title: E-85 in a mod? Post by ricracer113 on 11/11/10 at 6:55pm can E 85 be run with any success in a mod motor.....thinking of trying this |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by TALON75 on 11/11/10 at 10:23pm Yes but you need a carb tuned for it, a methanol carb can work but it is not optimal . |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by formercrewguy on 11/14/10 at 10:40am E85 has an octane rating of 100-105 from what i've read about it. |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by mudslinger47 on 11/15/10 at 8:16am So what do the differences in the carb need to be? Is it an acky carb jetted down or a gas crab jetted up? I know the E-85 generally has some gas in it so logically jetting a alky carb down a little would sound logical. Duane |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by TALON75 on 11/16/10 at 8:14pm Not real sure Duane but I would think they have to change a bit in the metering block also as the specific gravity of e-85 would be some where in between gas and alky . I too would think that a jetted down alky carb could do the trick but on that other board that you got kicked off of the general consesus is that it is better to have a carb tuned for the fuel . |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by ricracer113 on 11/16/10 at 8:50pm alky jetted down i found a guy for 150.00 to do the change and i heard real good things ...im really thinking of trying it in my rookie year in imca. |

Here is what Wiki says, E85 has an octane rating higher than that of regular gasoline's typical rating of 87, or premium gasoline's 91-93. This allows it to be used in higher compression engines which tend to produce more power per unit of displacement than their gasoline counterparts. The Renewable Fuels Foundation states in its Changes in Gasoline IV manual, "There is no requirement to post octane on an E85 dispenser. If a retailer chooses to post octane, they should be aware that the often cited 105 octane is incorrect. This number was derived by using ethanol’s blending octane value in gasoline. This is not the proper way to calculate the octane of E85. Ethanol’s true octane value should be used to calculate E85’s octane value. This results in an octane range of 94-96 (R+M)/2. These calculations have been confirmed by actual octane engine tests." [5] |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by XMODRACER on 11/25/10 at 6:58pm been running e-85 for a few races w/my modifed gas carb , good performance and awesome economy ! ;) |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by mudslinger47 on 11/25/10 at 9:06pm Did you have to do anything with the jetting? Just wondering. Duane |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by Missle Motorsports on 11/25/10 at 10:36pm Isn't E-85 only 15% Ethanol? |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by TALON75 on 11/25/10 at 11:11pm no Mark its the other way, up to 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline . |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by Hud25 on 11/25/10 at 11:19pm Hey Xmod, what kinda compression you running. I have been told by a few different pepole that 12-1 is about max you can run on E-85 |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by bluebyu on 11/26/10 at 8:19am My motor is 12:1 and have had no problems for two years! I also use racepumps fuel pump and regulator with bypass. |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by mudslinger47 on 11/26/10 at 8:44am What kind of carb do you use Blu? Duane |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by bluebyu on 11/27/10 at 7:36am C&S but Willys will do you one too. |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by XMODRACER on 12/03/10 at 11:02pm my motor is a 355 @14-1 copression , no nocks-pings ,nadda . the carb was my holley hp 750 for gas and the guys over at JEM RACING ENGINES did ther tricks to it , @ 10 sizes over ont he jets ............. ;) |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by mudslinger47 on 12/04/10 at 11:22am Now thats the info I was lookin for, Thanks Duane |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by Hud25 on 03/05/11 at 12:32am What kind of Fuel pump are you using? Pressure regulator? return line? I have been running a regular mechanical gas pump, no pressure regulator or return line on my race gas setup. Really thinking about making the switch to E-85 |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by over4t on 03/05/11 at 6:57am From what the midwest guys running it are saying the problem is finding a consistently good source for E85. Forexample ; Minnesota's supply is pretty consistent while Iowa's is not. Engines run cooler and better with the good stuff while other places have trouble with running hot. I've been toying with running it too but California doesn't seem to have as many sources as the Corn Belt does. Can't remember who but someone has a tester for finding true octane of E85. That;s the way to go from what I hear. |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by Hud25 on 03/05/11 at 8:52am My engine builder has told me that too. |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by XMODRACER on 03/05/11 at 9:48am i run a barrygrant high preasure mechanical ( same as when i was on alcohol) barry grant diaphram bypass w/return line @ 6 psi . i have heard about good and bad e85 but guess ive gotten lucky so far ......... but hell e85 is over 3 bucks a gallon , mmight as well go back to alky . ;) |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by Hud25 on 03/05/11 at 10:20am Thanks for the info, 3.50 a gallon sounds alot better than 8 plus a gallon for race gas. How is the maintainence with E-85? |
Title: Re: E-85 in a mod? Post by XMODRACER on 03/05/11 at 7:30pm just run the top lube like alcohol . ;) |
