Yes but you need a carb tuned for it, a methanol carb can work but it is not optimal .

E85 has an octane rating of 100-105 from what i've read about it.

So what do the differences in the carb need to be? Is it an acky carb jetted down or a gas crab jetted up? I know the E-85 generally has some gas in it so logically jetting a alky carb down a little would sound logical.

Not real sure Duane but I would think they have to change a bit in the metering block also as the specific gravity of e-85 would be some where in between gas and alky . I too would think that a jetted down alky carb could do the trick but on that other board that you got kicked off of the general consesus is that it is better to have a carb tuned for the fuel .

alky jetted down i found a guy for 150.00 to do the change and i heard real good things ...im really thinking of trying it in my rookie year in imca.

Here is what Wiki says,

E85 has an octane rating higher than that of regular gasoline's typical rating of 87, or premium gasoline's 91-93. no Mark its the other way, up to 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline .

Hey Xmod, what kinda compression you running. I have been told by a few different pepole that 12-1 is about max you can run on E-85

My motor is 12:1 and have had no problems for two years! I also use racepumps fuel pump and regulator with bypass.

my motor is a 355 @14-1 copression , no nocks-pings ,nadda . the carb was my holley hp 750 for gas and the guys over at JEM RACING ENGINES did ther tricks to it , @ 10 sizes over ont he jets ............. ;)

What kind of Fuel pump are you using? Pressure regulator? return line? I have been running a regular mechanical gas pump, no pressure regulator or return line on my race gas setup. Really thinking about making the switch to E-85

From what the midwest guys running it are saying the problem is finding a consistently good source for E85. Forexample ; Minnesota's supply is pretty consistent while Iowa's is not. Engines run cooler and better with the good stuff while other places have trouble with running hot.
I've been toying with running it too but California doesn't seem to have as many sources as the Corn Belt does. Can't remember who but someone has a tester for finding true octane of E85. That;s the way to go from what I hear.

i run a barrygrant high preasure mechanical ( same as when i was on alcohol) barry grant diaphram bypass w/return line @ 6 psi . i have heard about good and bad e85 but guess ive gotten lucky so far ......... but hell e85 is over 3 bucks a gallon , mmight as well go back to alky . ;)

Thanks for the info, 3.50 a gallon sounds alot better than 8 plus a gallon for race gas. How is the maintainence with E-85?
