Title: Welding and sunblock Post by imracin68j on 12/14/10 at 1:39pm Does anyone wear sunblock when they weld? I never have but I've gotten some pretty bad sunburns on the side of my face. Maybe from tacking welds. My derm looked at me a while back and asked if I did welding.. That can't be good. |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by Andrew on 12/14/10 at 1:42pm Full face helmet, welding jacket snapped all the way up to my chin, and gloves.... before I strike an arc, period. even on a 100+ degree day. |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by smart_guy on 12/14/10 at 6:29pm i dont wear sunblock when i weld. but you can get a "sunburn like" burn from welding (from arc welding at least) by welding in light colored clothes such as a white t-shirt. it happened to a friend of mine one time lol. now he wears a leather jacket buttoned all the way up everytime he has to stick weld. like the above poster said, it is smart to wear all the proper equipment to weld, even for short or quick jobs such as tacking |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by ka_jd7and1 on 12/14/10 at 6:46pm You can get one from MIG too. I was in short sleeves a couple weeks ago and got a "sunburn" on my arms where my sleeves didn't cover. I now have welding sleeves I can use with a T shirt. |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by ninjaforce1 on 12/14/10 at 7:13pm I am also a welder and fabricator, you should always wear the proper clothing and keep yourself safe! dont ever wear polyester shorts while welding :'( or flip flops :-X been there done that! I dont wear sleeves though ive been welding for many years and havent got a sunburn or burnt yet, guess it just depends on your skin color, yall must be milky white or something haha! |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by imracin68j on 12/14/10 at 7:19pm I wear a full face most of the time and still get burned on the sides. Nothing serious but a light burn. Maybe the UV light reflects off the concrete or something. |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by Wooliebuger1 on 12/14/10 at 7:50pm I used to make the kids in the school shop be full faced helmet, welding jacket and gloves, and if I caught any kid without full protection, it was off the machine, and informed the instruction he was breaking safety rules, and yes it is very important to use full protection...I was just a volunteer advisor, but I believe in full safety and wearing T-shirts and small face shield is looking for serious burns both to flesh and also skin for slag balls...JMOO...Don |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by Andrew on 12/14/10 at 7:52pm I'm a white boy, and I burn badly if I don't wear the proper gear, even with my 110 mig Welding light is a lot of UV. |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by Steve Curtis on 12/15/10 at 8:54am When I worked at Flowmaster I wore leathers and long sleeves everyday, if my leathers started to get a little worn I knew it right away because I would have a hell of a burn started. |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by valleypro23 on 12/17/10 at 9:14am most welding supply stores sell a jacket that seems to be perfect for when you're fabricating. i think its a cotton with some sort of treatment to keep it from catching fire. its light enough that it doesnt make it uncomfortable when you're under a car in a tight spot but provides enough protection that you're not gonna get burned. actually, heres a link to one. had mine for two years now, well worth the 20 bucks. http://store.weldersource.com/tiliweja.html |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by mighty16x on 12/17/10 at 3:37pm i do exhaust for a living. during the winter i wear long sleeves. but id rather not. sleeves and gloves always catch slag and sparks. its just like tanning, after my first arm burn of the summer, i just tan from then on. chicks dig the farmer/welder tan! ;) |
Title: Re: Welding and sunblock Post by TURBO98 on 12/18/10 at 9:05am I do it on my back under a car with no shirt and sunglasses... comon now! ;D |
