Title: Tilton starter rebuild. Keeps spitting out the pinion Post by imracin68j on 03/09/11 at 7:07pm I bought a new pinion for a tilton starter and put the C-clip on the pinion shaft but it's impossible to open the c-clip and clamp it back down to a snug fit. It works a few times and spits the shaft out. Can i tach-weld the c clip to the shaft as the c-clip always expands once you release pressure on it. |

Title: Re: Tilton starter rebuild. Keeps spitting out the pinion Post by imracin68j on 03/10/11 at 8:03pm Yes, I just ended up tach welding the clip to the pinion. If the pinion goes bad I'll just cut the shaft. I can't afford for the clip to come off at the track. The clips have a memory, once they are expanded, they want to stay expanded. Even if you clamp it down snug it releases once you unclamp it. |
Title: Re: Tilton starter rebuild. Keeps spitting out the pinion Post by 55X on 03/11/11 at 8:44am ok, but the larger ring has two counter bores, one is for the spring side, the other (smaller counter bore) side is for the retainer clip. once you put the clip on you need to somtime force the larger ring around the clip because it is over streched. The clip should not be able to come off. welding it works too. |
