Title: Antioch Speedway - 7/23 Results Post by LMR on 07/26/11 at 12:23pm Antioch Speedway July 23, 2011 ________________________________________ A NIGHT OF SEASON FIRST TIME WINNERS: RYAN BERNAL IN ALL STAR SPRINTS, TROY FOULGER IN DIRTcar MODIFIEDS Mike Adaskaveg Antioch, Calif. - All five divisions had new faces in the winner’s circle for the first time this season at Antioch Speedway Saturday night. Ryan Bernal, a Hollister, Calif. high school student, waged a wheel-to-wheel battle with All Star Wingless Sprint Car standouts Alex Shute and Billy Macedo in the 25 lap main event. Troy Foulger, Reigning track champ in the DIRTcar West modifieds ended his long streak of second place finishes with a win. Jon Haney of Brentwood scored his first win ever in the “Mini-Trux” division after nine years of trying. Dan Downey of San Jose inherited a win in the “Four-Bangers” after Richard Dragonetti was disqualified. Antioch 50 year veteran Mike Gustafson of Concord ended the Fred Ryland and Larry Damitz domination by winning the Limited Late Model main event. “I love racing here - the track is banked, racey and has two grooves,” Bernal said in victory lane. “It was cool battling side by side with Macedo - he’s a really good driver.” Macedo and Bernal dueled lap after lap in the sprint car thriller. Shute stormed into second with a lap to go. “My car was perfect and the race was perfect,” Bernal said. “As long as I am in a race car, I’m happy. Winning a good clean race makes me more than happy. You can’t describe the feeling.” Foulger’s win brought the fans to their feet. It seemed he could not catch leader Kenny Neu. Then, on the last turn of the last lap, Neu got slowed a bit by lapped traffic and Foulger dove to the inside to claim the checkered flag. “I’ve been waiting for this win all season,” he said in victory lane. “I set the right rear in the tire ruts high on the track waiting for the opportunity.” Foulger’s win came in his old car - the one which he has had every single win in. “I’ve had 20 seconds in the new car, but only the old car can win,” he said. “Kenny is always fast. Lapped traffic saved me.” Neu finished second with earlier leader Michael Salazar having an impressive run to take third. “Finally!” Limited Late Model winner Gustafson said in victory lane. “The car was flying - like it is supposed to.” Gustafson has been a consistent top runner all season, often trying to crack into the top two positions being dominated by Larry Damitz and Fred Ryland. Damitz and Mike Hynes made contact in turn four, the resulting spin causing a radiator hose to break in Damitz’s car. Ryland finished second Third place Jim Freethy was three abreast with leaders at one point in the race. “That was the most fun I had on the race track in a long time,” he told the Gustafson and Ryland in victory lane. Downey’s first win in “Four-Bangers” came with a lesson. “Don’t wear your sunglasses at night,” he laughed in victory lane. “I had them on for the sun, but couldn’t see in the shadows on turn three and four. I wound up dropping to last before I could rip them off.” Downey worked his way all the way to the front, and was chasing Richard Dragonetti by time the checkered flag flew. Dragonetti, however, was disqualified in post-race inspection. Haney raised his fists to the air in victory lane after nine years of trying to win in various divisions. His dad, Gene Haney, point leader in the Super Hobby Division, joined him for the celebration. “This is so exciting,” the Local 342 Steamfitter said. “I tried and tried, week after week, for nine whole years. I can finally know how it feels to win - and it feels real good.” Racng continues next Saturday night at Antioch Speedway, when DIRTcar West modifieds, Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Hobby Stocks, Super Hobby Stocks and Mini-Trucks are on the schedule. 07/23/11 Antioch Speedway –All Star Wingless Sprints Heat 1 1.-M1 Billy Macedo 2.-3 Adam Kaeding 3.-32 Alex Shute 4.-41 David Press 5.-6 Joe Stornetta 6.-2N Shannon Newton 7.-44 Rich Panfili Heat 2 1.-87 Ryan Bernal 2.-21 Roy Fisher 3.-24N Nick Larsen 4.-8 Dan Gonderman 5.-23 Tyler Henriquez 6.-55 Danny Malfatti 7.-5L Jeff Banbury Trophy Dash 1.-21 Roy Fisher 2.-3 Adam Kaeding 3.-32 Alex Shute 4.-24N Nick Larsen Main Event 1.-87 Ryan Bernal 2.-32 Alex Shute 3.-M1 Billy Macedo 4.-41 David Press 5.-3 Adam Kaeding 6.-8 Dan Gonderman 7.-24N Nick Larsen 8.-2N Shannon Newton 9.-44 Rich Panfili 10.-23 Tyler Henriquez 11.-21 Roy Fisher 12.-6 Joe Stornetta 13.-5L Jeff Banbury 07/23/11 Antioch Speedway DIRTcar West Modifieds Heat 1 1.-49 Troy Foulger 2.-29 Mike Salazar 3.-141 Trent Wentworth 4.-99 Kenny Neu 5.-17 Terry DeCarlo 6.-28 Chester Kniss 7.-01 Terry Kaiser Main Event 1.-49 Troy Foulger 2.-99 Kenny Neu 3.-29 Mike Salazar 4.-17 Terry DeCarlo 5.-01 Terry Kaiser 6.-141 Trent Wentworth 7.-28 Chester Kniss 8.-68 John Escobar 07/23/11 Antioch Speedway Limited Late Models Main Event 1.-2 Mike Gustafson 2.-7 Fred Ryland 3.-99 Jim Freethy 4.-05 Mike Hynes 5.-15 Larry Damitz 6.-83 Michelle Newman 7.-65 Lori Brown 07/23/11 Antioch Speedway Mini Trux Main Event 1.-45 Jon Haney 2.-66 Pete Paulsen 3.-73 Ron Mayberry 4.-40 Bobby Carter 5.-50 Dean Cline 6.-66X Jessica Jones 7.-39 Junior Garcia 07/23/11 Antioch Speedway Four Bangers Main Event 1.-38 Richard Dragonetti (DQ) 2.-56 Dan Downey 3.-25 Justin Silveira 4.-99 Phil McClelland 5.-74 Shawna Vannucchi 6.-14W Robbie Waldrop 7.-77 Dereck Dragonetti 8.-19 Matt Larsen 9.-76X Mike Felt 10.-66 Carlos Gonzales 11.-3 Fred Radabaugh 12.-45 Laura Crabtree |
