I've got the Transponder that's a new requirement at SMS.

It's new, but didn't come with directions, or anything about how it works.

I've been told that it should be less than 24" off the gound, that's easy.

I've looked at it and see that it has a 'hole' in the 'bottom' that I ASSUME is some sort of 'eye' or transmitter.

If so, then I'd like to attach its little mount to the floorboard tunnel, on the right side, then bore a small hole throiugh the floor so it can 'see' the ground.

Since it was a pretty expensive piece that I'd llke to protect, IF my mounting plan is OK, then can I put a piece of clear plexiglass over the hole to keep the dirt and mud from coming in and blocking it?

Not any kind of expert but saw some on sprint cars had them mounted above tubing, don't think the transponder has to see anything. The cable is buried in the track so there is really nothing to see, unit sends a signal. most of the sprint cars had them on the front bars in front of the radiator. At the end it is who gets there first. The closer to the front may give you a win or position over someone with it mounted by the driver.

well if you mount it up front and the other guy has it mounted on the back at a photo finish youll win! LOL

well i tie rebar for a living so i used doubled up tie wire and it worked great for me lol. but i have made a couple million ties in my life so i know what that wire can and cant hold

Tip: If there is a Red #2 car from Salinas in your class, mount your transponder on his rear bumper.

You should ask the person in charge at your track were to mount it.Because if it is a photo finish and one car has his further forward he just won.

Where u lose is on the first laps when the fields are tight and the yellows happen more often.

That makes a lot of sense. Everyone's is in exactly the same place.

My loop is approx 12" under the ground. If you mount the transponder more then 12" from the ground on your car, your at risk of not being scored as they only pick up within a range of 24" as per MyLaps. So this situation really is not a advantage in my opion. Scott

I run Hanford with it on my upper door bar (Graphic location) in the cockpit with no issues just because I don't feel like replacing a rental. Not sure on how deep their reception strip is. It is however a simple radio freq. signal so you should just be going against the time it takes to send/receive rather than a signal not getting picked up. The more metal/obsticles it has to cut through obviously puts the transmission at risk and is probably a large chunk of the reason times don't get picked up. I think AMB wants everything to be as accurate as possible and having one car that noses out a car and loses on the books makes their product look bad.

You want it up as high as possible without losing the signal

The one on Petes car that Clay drives is where Dave said, at the motor plate, about 18" off the ground. Works fine. Gets pummled with mud off the right front, there tough don't worry about it. If you own it make sure its charged, if you rent it, they just want it back.

u should be fine! seen alot of guys run them inside the cars. if it dont work they tell u in hot laps.in my hobby stock its on the outside firewall in the clip that come with it, and on the sportmod on back side of motor plate in the clip.

I tried running mine in the cockpit and it wouldn't catch. I ended up having to put it out in the elements which is what I didn't want to do.
