Title: Silver Dollar Speedway - March 7-8 Results Post by LMR on 03/09/14 at 2:22am Silver Dollar Speedway March 8, 2014 _______________________________________ Chadwick, Abreu and Laliberte Score Silver Cup Wins by Troy Hennig CHICO, CA (March 8) - Neither rain, wind or lack of sleep was going to interfere with promoter Dennis Gage and his finely tuned staff of workers to get the second night of Silver Cup completed and in the books. The Saturday night race attracted 86 different race teams and over 1300 fans in the main grandstand side. When it was all said and done, crowd favorite Rico Abreu scored an impressive win in the winged 360 main event. Kellen Chadwick was absolutely perfect in winning the challenging dirt modified main event. It was his second consecutive Silver Cup championship. The Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Shootout winner was Tommy Laliberte who drove a solid race and was fun to watch. A staggering 43 dirt modifieds entered the Saturday night show. Tonight marked the first round of the Nor-Cal Dirt Modified Challenge. Throughout the entire night, the modifieds put on a second to none show featuring close racing and high speed drama. Defending and two-time Silver Cup Champion Ryan McDaniel led at the start of the 30 lap main event. McDaniel has amassed 37 career main event wins at Chico since 1999. It was evident from the start, however, that the car to beat was Kellen Chadwick. On lap four Chadwick passed Troy Folger for second. From lap six to lap eleven Chadwick and McDaniel raced side by side. Their determination to take the lead coupled with their understanding of not crashing each other was fun to watch. On lap 13 Chadwick finally edged ahead of McDaniel and took the lead. After that moment Chadwick was a rocket ship and extended his lead. The battle for third on back was intense. Monte Bischoff, Duane Cleveland and Nick DeCarlo all were vying for the third spot. On the final lap, Folger drove around McDaniel and solidified the second spot. McDaniel came home in the third position. With two laps remaining DeCarlo passed Bischoff for fourth. At the finish Chadwick held a 1.506 second advantage. With the large car count, two B main events were needed. Winning the first 8-lap B main was Duane Cleveland. Finishing second was Roger Lorenzini. In the second B main event Kyle Casson beat Riley Simmons. Both cars transferred to the feature event. Ryan McDaniel, Randy McDaniel, Kellen Chadwick and Troy Folger were each victorious in their eight lap heat races. Nick DeCarlo turned the fastest lap in qualifying. His lap was 15.860. Andy Gregg and Rico Abreu started on the front row. Gregg got the whole shot and took the lead. Justin Sanders passed Abreu on the second circuit. On lap five Sean Becker, last night's winner, moved into the third spot. Abreu slipped back to fourth. While Gregg continued to lead and work his way around the tricky surface Becker moved around Sanders to secure the second spot. Gregg had secured a decent lead while maneuvering through slower traffic. The outcome of the race changed dramatically when a late race caution bunched back up the top five. On the restart, Abreu thrilled the crowd as he found a groove around the outside of Sanders and Becker to grab the second spot. On the next lap Abreu passed Gregg for the lead. The final few laps saw Abreu extend his lead. On lap 28 Becker as able to pass Gregg for the second spot. Those two had a spirited battle to finish out the race. Sanders held on to finish in the fourth spot. Kyle Hirst made some moves and worked his way into a fifth place finish. The hard charger of the night was Matt Peterson. The Wilton based driver started 17th and parked his Miller Lite #p37 in the seventh spot at the checkered. Andy Forsberg cruised to an easy win in the 12 lap B main. Following him into the feature event was Carl Droivold, J J Hickle and Jayme Barnes. Herman Klein, Sean Becker, Kyle Hirst and Steven Tiner were all victorious in heat race action. Abreu was the quickest in qualifying as he turned a 12.982. A total of 28 winged sprint cars competed in the nights racing action. The Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Shootout Series kicked things off with 15 drivers competing on the final night of Silver Cup. Tommy Laliberte was the class of the field. He turned the fastest lap in qualifying, 14.990, won the first heat race and went on to lead every lap of the main event. It was an impressive feat to say the least. Joe Stornetta was also as impressive. The young driver is always competitive and drives as hard as anyone in the series. He finished in the second spot. Chico's Taylor Nelson turned in one of his best races of his young career. Nelson ran a solid third all night. Shane Myhre had a good night and finished fourth. Veteran Terry Schank Jr. started ninth and finished fifth. Last night's winner and defending champion Scott Hall won the second heat race. Racing will resume this Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway with point race #1 featuring winged 360 sprints, dirt modifieds, street stocks and hobby stocks. Pit gate will open at 4 pm and front gate at 6 pm. 360 Sprints 1 24 Rico Abreu 2 75 Sean Becker 3 14r Andy Gregg 4 18 Justin Sanders 5 83 Kyle Hirst 6 11 Roger Crockett 7 P37 Matt Peterson 8 94 Steven Tiner 9 11vs John Michael Bunch 10 2 Brad Furr 11 3 J.J. Title: Re: Silver Dollar Speedway - March 7-8 Results Post by LMR on 03/09/14 at 1:17pm Silver Dollar Speedway March 7, 2014 _______________________________________ The Shark Swims to Victory During Silver Cup Night One at Silver Dollar Speedway by Elijah Jones CHICO, CA (March 7) - Sean Becker completed the clean sweep of the Friday night portion of the Silver Cup by charging from the 8th starting position to take the victory aboard the Menne Motorsports #75 machine. "Every time I strap in to this car I feel like we can win." stated a very excited Becker in Victory Lane. The track was like the Silver Dollar of the 1990's Rough, Rutted, Fast, and Fun to Watch. The win marks his 47th career win at the Speedway. Other winners during the Friday night portion of the Silver Cup included Rio Linda's Scott Hall in the Wingless Sprint Car division, and Nick DeCarlo from Martinez, Ca. Took home the victory in the Dirt Modified class. At the start of the Winged 360 Sprint Car A Main it was a good old fashioned dog fight between Jayme Barnes and "Mr. Excitement himself, Andy Forsberg. Jayme would hold off Forsberg's many attempts to move past on the low side of the track until lap number seven when Forsberg was able to finally clear Barnes and move into the top spot. But the night would turn to disaster for the veteran driver on the very next lap. Forsberg entered turns 3 and 4 right in the middle of the track trying to glide over the ruts when the car hooked violently and barrel rolled in a vicious cycle of flips thus ending his bid at the win and handing the lead back over to Barnes. Forsberg climbed from the car and rode the quad back to his pit. On the restart it was Barnes who would hold off Steven Tiner, but the show was Sean Becker at this point. Sean restarted in the 4th position on lap eight, and in the next few laps would do battle with Tiner, and Shane Golobic for the second spot. Once he cleared those two he set his sights on Barnes. Becker was able to finally track down and clear Barnes in turn two on lap number 16 and would drive on to victory. Fremont, Ca.'s Shane Golobic was also able to get by Jayme Barnes for the 2nd spot. Barnes came home 3rd. Steven Tiner had a strong showing tonight coming home in the 4th spot, and Roger Crockett from Medford, Oregon rounded out the top five. Sean Becker set the fastest time in time trials with a time of 12.265. Heat Race victories were claimed by Becker, Jayme Barnes, and Andy Forsberg. The B-Main was claimed by Colin Baker after leader Chase Johnson spun on the white flag lap. Albert Gill led the Dirt Modifieds down to the Green Flag in A Main competition. Gill would lead the first two laps before Jeff Olschowka would overtake him for the lead. Olschowka however would only lead two laps before he would make contact with the white tire in turn two thus ending his bid at victory early in the race. With Olschowka out of the race, on the restart that left Nick DeCarlo in the lead. Nick DeCarlo would go on to lead the final 16 laps of the main event bringing home his second straight friday night victory at the Silver Cup. DeCarlo was chased across the line by the defending Track Champion Duane Cleveland in 2nd, defending Street Stock Track Champion Jake Vantol in 3rd, the 11k of Kyle Casson in the 4th position, and Albert Gill would finish 5th after starting on the pole. A rare treat only done at Silver cup saw the Modifieds do group qualifying with Nick DeCarlo set the fastest lap with a time of 15.501. DeCarlo also had the clean sweep of the night by way of setting fast time, winning heat race number one, and claiming the main event. Heat race number two was won by Duane Cleveland, and Heat 3 was claimed by Jeff Olschowka, and heat race number four was claimed by the #68x Jay Sears. A B-Main was needed tonight for the modifieds. That race was claimed by Chico's own Richard Papenhausen. Scott Hall won his third Silver Cup Weekend main event victory in as many years in the Wingless Sprint Car class. Hall took the lead early in the race and held off hard charges from Shane Myhre and defending track champion Rowdy McClenon. In the last five laps McClenon was right on the tail tank of Hall. But Hall continued to hit his line lap after lap, thus making it impossible for McClenon to get around him. McClenon would hang on to finish in the 2nd position, Shane Myhre would finish in the 3rd position, Dustin Thompson drove his #337 machine to a 4th place finish while Don Emery was scored in the 5th position. Group qualifying also took place for the wingless cars, with Angelique Bell setting the fastest lap with a time of 14.621. The lone Wingless Sprint heat race was won by Anderson, California's Rowdy McClenon. Most people thought, "No way we are racing this weekend. Its gonna be too wet." Dennis Gage is not "most people". Dennis had it set in his head that racing would go on as scheduled this weekend and he did everything in his power to make sure that happened. Dennis and the SDS crew worked sun up to sun down trying to pump water out and dry the pit area. They did a wonderful job making sure the show went on. The Silver Cup Continues tomorrow night, Saturday, March 8th, with the 360 Sprint Cars returning, the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Car Series, and the Nor-Cal Modifieds all ready to do battle on the ¼ mile clay oval. The pit gate is set to open at 2:30pm and the Main Grandstand gate is set to open at 5:00pm. Thank you all for joining us tonight at the Silver Dollar Speedway and we hope to see you again tomorrow for Night Two of the 2014 Silver Cup!
