Title: Antioch Speedway - 3/7 Results Post by SNR on 03/07/15 at 9:59pm Antioch Speedway March 7, 2015 _______________________________________ McCARTHY RETURNS TO SPRINT CAR VICTORY LANE; LEE, MYERS, AND GARNER WITH SPECIAL WINS Oval Motorsports ANTIOCH, Calif. (March 7) - Former champion Art McCarthy of San Jose drove to victory with Chris Magoon of Oakley challenging him to the finish line in the Winged 360 Sprint Car feature at Antioch Speedway Saturday night. Jeff Lee of Pt. Richmond fought off a late challenge from Kyle Bakkie of Citrus Heights in the Wingless Sprint Car main event. “It’s been a few years since I won,” McCarthy commented after the race. He drove the last two laps without brakes. “My car touched a lapped car and it cracked a brake line,” he explained. I couldn’t even think about Chris (Magoon). I just kept concentrating on my driving. It was fun.” McCarthy coasted to a stop after the finish and had to have his car pushed to victory lane. Magoon could hear the roar of the fans after he got off the throttle at the fall of the checkered flag. He slid his car up to the wall in a wild attempt to pass McCarthy at the finish line. “It is a great feeling to see the fans standing and hear the screaming over the sounds on the track.” Magoon said. “It was all-out racing to the finish, and it thrills both the drivers and the fans.” Antioch’s Shawn Arriaga was third, followed by Anthony Espinoza of Fremont and Brandon Powell of Chico. Veteran driver Lee, 63, who raced midget cars for team USA in New Zealand back in the 1980s, never won a sprint car race before. His challenge came from young Bakkie, who has continues to hone his skills in the division. Bakkie, a junior at UC Davis majoring in chemistry, had all he could do to control his car with a loose shock absorber. Yet, he finished on Lee’s back bumper. “I didn’t even know he was back there – he’s so respectful,” Lee said of Bakkie.”I had my ‘first race of the year problems’– the car was running out of water and was overheating.” Lee raced to win despite a rising temperature gauge on his dash. Later, he found he had cracked the cylinder wall in the car’s engine.” “It was still real exciting for me, even though I got a few weeks of work ahead to rebuild the engine,” he added. Rick Panfilli of Antioch was right behind Bakkie to take third. Alan Miranda of Petaluma and James East of San Jose rounded out the top five. New Mom Wins Hobby Stock Main Event Three-time track champion Melissa Myers of Brentwood won the Hobby Stock main event six weeks after giving birth to her and husband Brad’s first child, Tyler. Melissa Myers took the previous season off to have a safe pregnancy, and got behind the wheel at the last minute after Brad installed a new engine in her hobby stock. Kimo Oreta of Allendale, the reigning champion, could not catch Myers. Nick Baldwin of Oakley chased Oreta and finished third. Michael Cooper and Russell Shearer, both of Bay Point, completed the top five. Big Win for Mark Garner in Limited Late Model Division Mark Garner of Antioch returned to victory lane in the Limited Late Model Division. Garner, who has been racing since 1995, topped arch-rival Larry Damitz of Vallejo. Garner last won the fall Limited Late Model challenge at Merced Speedway last year. “This is a special win for me,” Garner explained. He is dedicating the season to his father, Jerry Garner, who is ill. “Dad raced at Antioch and Merced Speedways forever. Everyone on this team is giving 110 per cent this season. It was in 1969 that dad won the state stock car championship racing at the two tracks.” Garner, who drives a car owned by Antioch’s Chet and Beverly Kniss, will be at Merced Speedway this week as Antioch and Merced Speedways alternate schedules. Mike Hynes of Suisun and Danville’s Jim Freethy completed the top five in the feature event. This Week at Antioch Speedway The fastest stock cars to race on dirt - the DIRTcar Late Models – headline Saturday night’s program at Antioch Speedway.
