Title: Jones Captures $1000 Victory At Merced Speedway Post by C.W. on 06/12/15 at 2:29am Here's the unofficial article about the $1000 to win Dwarf Car race at Merced Speedway... Leading all but the opening lap of the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event, Shawn Jones went on to score a $1000 victory Saturday night at Merced Speedway. Jones was only briefly challenged on various restarts and left the battle behind him for second. Danny Wagner won a late duel with15 year old Adam Teves, who in turn held off his father David Teves for third. Antioch point leader D. Teves was challenging Wagner for second at the midway point of the race when he spun with a flat tire in Turn 2. He was challenging Adam for third when the checkered flag flew. Kevin Miraglio rounded out the Top 5. The race had a red flag on lap ten after Charlie Correia hit the front wall and rolled twice. Correia was checked by the paramedics and reportedly has some injured ribs that could take him out of the action for a while. Travis Dutra was running in third when he spun on the back stretch on lap 12. The result was a muli car crash that ended the race for a few drivers, including Dutra. Chad Matthias retired from fifth on lap 15. South Bay Dwarf Car point leader Gene "Punky" Pires was scored sixth as Matthias, Tim Reeder, Dutra and Thomas Leiby rounded out the Top 10. A Teves, Jones and Dutra won the heat races. Point leader Darren Miguel grabbed the lead on lap three and went on to capture his seventh Mini Stock Main Event victory of the season. Miguel was never seriously threatened down the stretch, and George “Speedy” Davis was a season best second ahead of Chris Corder. Kelly Campanile had just taken third from Corder at the midway point of the race before her slightly smoking Pinto lost power a lap later. Danny Wagner crossed the line as the final lead lap finisher in fourth, but he was not being scored. Regular announcer Alex Odishoo was in contention for third when his motor began misfiring again, but he still took a checkered flag a lap down in fourth, followed by Mike Congdon, Campanile, Dennis Copus and Brian Widdowson. Jennifer Corder scratched after heat race problems. Heat wins went to Miguel and Campanile. Saturday night racing returns to Merced Speedway on June 20th with IMCA Modifieds, Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and the Valley Sportsman division. |
