The event pays tribute to long time promoter and two time BCRA Hardtop champion John P. Soares. The second generation racer Armstrong had a second place finish in his first start in his new car at his home track in Placerville last week. He won the 15 lap race by a comfortable margin "The Green Hornet" Tommy Thomson made his first start of the season and returned to the track at which he flipped his car a few seasons ago. He was glad that he returned as finished second ahead of past track Dwarf Car champion Dan Williams. Stock Car veteran Dennis Armstrong wheeled his car to a fourth place finish ahead of Dave Reed in the former John Philbert car. One of the founders of what became the CHA, past Placerville Pure Stock champion Mike McClure made his first start of the season and drove the Leroy Geving Tribute car to a sixth place finish ahead of Ken Clifford, Russ Kraft, Joe Hopp, Steve Cloyes and a newcomer named Spencer in the #92 car. The race featured a parade lap led by open wheel champion Sparky Howard in a Vintage Midget. The Hardtops are in Antioch on August 20th before the big weekend at Calistoga as part of the Louie Vermeil Classic on September 2-3. On September 10th, it's back to Antioch for the return of the Chet Thomson Memorial Race. |
