Ricky Thornton Jr. wins the IMCA Fair Feature

VENTURA, CA (August 5) - The 2015 Ventura County Fair Motorsports night once again provided racing action for the fans in attendance at the opening night of the FAIR Wednesday August 5. With the best in IMCA Modified open wheel stock cars, VRA Pro Dwarf Cars, Hobby Stocks, USAC Focus Midgets and a Demolition Derby, fans saw wild and exciting racing action.

Wednesday night saw 32 IMCA Modifieds signed in for competition. All the best drivers in Southern California and a few from further away were there to go for the $1,000 winners check and the prestige that goes to a Fair winner. There were four heat races held with wins going to Justin Crockett, Mitchell Niemi, Bill Bartells and Ricky Thornton Jr. They then ran a 17 car 12 lap semi main that transferred 4 cars to the feature for the 30 lap main event. Taking the semi main win was Austin Rodarte. The 20 main event cars and drivers then ran a 30 lap feature that was wild and, action filled from lap one to lap 30. Chet Reeves led laps 1-6 and the Ricky Thorton Jr., took the lead and never relinquished it to take the 30 lap main event win and claim the $1,000 first place check and the title of 2015 IMCA Fair winner. Cody Laney who finished second followed to the line by Josh Vogt, P J Pike and Eric Evans. The hard charger of the race went to Ventura Raceway 2014 IMCA champion, Josh Vogt who started 20 and finished third improving 17 positions during the race..

Thirty-one VRA Pro Dwarf Cars also competed on Wednesday night. Pro Dwarf action saw four heat races run with wins going to Bob Brown Jr. in heat one, Tommy Velasquez taking heat two, David Taft taking heat three and Austin Weiland took heat four. Darren Bent took the twelve lap semi main. The 20 lap main event went to Darren Browm followed by Mike Neal, Ray Estrada, David Taft and Johnny Conley. The race saw winner Darren Brown lead all 20 laps of the feature.

Seventeen USAC/VRA Focus Midgets took the track as well Wednesday night. They ran two heats with wins going to Ashley Hazleton in heat one and Tristin Thomas in heat two. Thomas then went on to win the 20 lap main event taking the lead from Hazleton on lap 15 and then led to the finish. following Thomas and Hazleton to the line were Shjawn Buckley, Robert Dalby and Gary Howard.

The final group racing on Wednesday were our VRA Hobby Stocks. These full sized, V8 powered, American Stock Cars put on an exciting night of racing. Visiting Santa Maria driver Dave Schuyler took the 20 lap main event over Tom Stephens, David Heurung, and the father and son team on Sam and Gary Garvin fourth and fifth respectively. Two heat races were run with wins going to Dave Schuyler and Mike Stanford.

To end the night a 6 car Demolition Derby was contested. On this night the banging and crashing lasted 9 minutes with first time DD competitor Sara Bonebakker taking the win as the last car running. For her win she claimed the $1,500 winners check. Finishing second through sixth were Evan Thrasher, Matthew McDonald, Lara Landry, Darren Loe and Billy "O" Owezeski.

Ventura Raceway wants to thank all the competitors, crews and fans who came out to make the FAIR event one of the best ever. Ventura Raceway will now take a couple of weeks off until August 29, when we return to racing action after the FAIR has completed its run. On that night VRA Sprint Cars will contest the next Battle At The Beach Race. Also competing on that night will be, Senior Sprints, Dwarf Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Sport Compacts and our Kids Classes.
