LOCUST GROVE AR. Kevin Salter of Batesville continued his stranglehold on the Schoenfeld Headers Mid-America Street Stock Championship. Salter won the event for the fourth consecutive year, but for the first 38 laps, it looked like his streak would be broken. Robby Arnold dominated everything but time trials. Arnold was 17th in that portion of the weekend, but first in everything else leading up to the 50 Lap Feature Event.
Arnold held the pole, with Tim Brown to his outside. Disaster also struck for Tony Anglin and T. J. Herndon before the race got officially underway. Those two locked bumpers on the backstretch on the first lap, and brought out the caution. Both had to re-start the race from the rear.
Arnold was off with the green flag, followed by Brown, Salter, Stan Ellison, and Richie Tosh. Arnold was pacing the field by 10 carlengths already by lap five. A lap nine caution slowed the field. Two more quick cautions, on lap 10, then lap 14 kept things on an even keel at that point. Yet another caution on lap 15 resulted in front-runner Ellison heading for the pits for fresh rubber.
The race proceeded for another six laps before the yellow flag waved again, this time for Kevin Grizzle, Bobby Hobbs, and Raymond King all together in turn four. Brian Ritchie brought out another yellow two laps later.
Arnold paced the field again on the restart, with Salter, Brown, Tosh, and Shawn Walsh trailing. Walsh took over fourth on lap 30 in turn four, while out front Arnold was ten car lengths ahead of Salter by lap 33. Arnold was expanding his margin, out to 15 car lengths by lap 35 before the yellow waved on lap 38 for debris. Arnolds night came to the unexpected end in turn two where the car was stalled, and required assistance to the pits.
Kevin Salter inherited the lead at that point, with Tim Brown, Shawn Walsh, Richie Tosh, and Claudie Cook making up the top five. Tosh got back around Walsh for third on lap 39. The caution flag waved again on lap 42 for a crash on the front stretch between Kevin Grizzle, Joe Payne, and Bobby Hobbs.
Kevin Salter drove away from the field again on the restart and lead the final eight laps for the win. Tim Brown, Richie Tosh, Claudie Cook, and Shawn Walsh made up the top five. Stan Ellison, Brandon Smith, Jared Wagster, Bruce Busch, and Brad Buck rounded out the top ten. Tim Brown pocket an extra $500 from Schoenfeld Headers for using their product, and displaying their decal on his car.
