yeah they would get a hell of a show but they need good managment first to do this and actually approve something that will make money and pay out good ..... good example of this is why the world of outlaws will no longer come to sms and that was a really good money making show but who knows maybe next year will be a better year with new managment

Just so you all know, the World of Outlaws does not come to SMS anymore for a multitude of reasons. The obvious is the price, last I heard (the last time they came when I flagged them) they wanted $75,000 just to show. Also in that low price ( being sarcastic) you had to buy the hotel rooms for the top ten in points (crew, etc). Doug Fort told me he lost his a$$ on those shows, but he had a two day deal with them and he loved Sprint cars. Also, Ted (the owner of WOO) liked Doug and loved coming to SMS. Steve Kinser told me himself, that SMS is like NO other track they race on. Racing is not cheap, and getting high dollar shows costs a lot of money. We also used to have the upper area available for parking, remember that? Those days are long gone. Parking has also become somewhat of an issue. I doubt that we will se the Outlaws return, but maybe a good two day show would be fun. Remember two years ago when we had a two day Dwarf car show? Didn't think so, not many fans showed up for that.... Two day shows are tough, but they could be done.

Hey Tom how about the Pacific Coast 100 The first annual turned out to be the only annual.
Or the Factory Stock 3/33's
Or to get real old the enduros. I say if you bring back any of those three bring back the enduros. There was always alot of fans for those and it sparked a couple of racing careers

You are correct. The enduros were awesome! I loved them, even drove in a couple, built cars for 4. I was disappointed when Doug told me that he was cancelling them, tried talking him into keeping them, but it didn't work. He wanted the big car counts, the last one had only 80 or so cars, turned into a race more than an endurance thing. He actually called down on the radio to red flag the race because it was going to fast. The Pacific Coast Nats was the two day Dwarf car race. You must have been that guy in the stands....... that only guy....... lol

The two day dwarf car race(that was a very bad idea-honestly it was)
As for the pacific coast 100 I was there I have a T-shirt to prove it.
In fact I have several Obsolete T-shirts. The only annual pacific coast 100, the WDLMT shirt(s) and even a stacker 2 shirt( giving to me by late model champ Joey Claborn)
Maybe Chris Kearns will hook me up with a ALL_STARS shirt

Hey Tom, how come we don't do anything like that anymore??? it was such good times... or bring in new things like flat track racing, etc... I know a guy who would love to do his flat track races over there, but didn't get an answer out of Nettie!! He has tried on several occasions, but no answer!! He is the only guy that i know that has 6 identical Indians 60's motorcycles... He could bring her in soooo much money!! its just an suggestion!!!

They tried the flat track stuff and found that the track was just too tacky. I dont think the guys liked it?
The quads were scary fast though.

The SMS 2 day race flooped because there was ( ) advertising. I think they thought guys would just show up and race without knowing anything about it. *

They actually used to do moto-cross races at the track, up the back hillside..... I asked Doug about that years ago, his reply (which made sense) was "Car people watch car races, motorcycle people watch motorcycle races". He wasn't interested in doing more motorcycle related stuff. We had some flat track bikes there years ago for exhibition stuff, along with a trials bike. We even had quads and go-karts a few times. I thought they were great, but Doug wasn't interested. I am just guessing here, but if Doug wasn't interested, then Nettie will follow suit and not be interested. Don't know what else to tell you.....

This area needs a dirt kart track BAD, I know there is alot of people with dirt karts but no where to run them. SMS track is too big but it would still be nice to have track other than being in someone's backyard (crompedaddy).

I went to Mike Cappmeyers today to check out his Jr. Midgets. Those things are pretty cool. It would be awesome to have a track around here for those.

I just e-mailed the FairPark when and if they answer back with there rates I will let everyone know . This would be easiest place to start a track if people are interrested Even the infield at SMS would be easy. Or the outer pit area(during the dry season)The biggest problem would be finding someone to run the whole thing. And it anit going to be me.

A couple of things:
1)The current World of Outlaws sanction is $80,000 for a two day show but, now that the National Sprint Tour (Steve Kinser, Danny Lasoski, Tim Kaeding, Dean Jacobs, Kerry Madsen, Brain Paulus, Shane Stewart, Travis Rilat, Jonathan Allard, Chad Hillier...to name a few of there drivers) has formed I am sure they are negotiating as that is the rumor going around. Competition brings better prices right? In order to make a buck on that deal you need a corporate namesake event sponsor just like the other tracks do in order to offset the costs. Ted Johnson no longer runs the WoO as he is in seriously bad health battling lung cancer, he also sold the Outlaws to DIRT motorsports 3 years ago. He was in a "bad" financial state. The going rate for either series tickets is roughly $30-40 depending on the event location and how many days. I am not sure how many people exactly SMS can seat anymore, but I would think that if the place was full it would be feasible to turn a dollar on a big ticket race like that. The last USAC/CRA race had a great crowd, near full it seemed and there was still parking available. If someone was clever they would offer commuter group discounts that you pass out as the group vehicle enters the parking lot or check into the SMAT running a special line from a large in town parking lot. Give the passengers on the bus a couple of bucks off or something or a free hot dog, something and they will use it. Also it would be good for boozers.
2) bring back that big midget race at the end of the year, they tried it once and the rain came but dang there was a ton of cars and big names. Midgets at SMS are priceless to all that have witnessed them and follow midget racing. Bring back the Golden State Challenge, this is the first year in ages we have not had them and I think it has to do with Swindell who lost that series to the Padjens in Chico. SMS needs the winged cars at least once a year they are steeped in history. Non wings are OK but Santa Maria had a history of winged racing that needs revitalization. I know this is a stock car board and I love that racing too, but alot of people LOVE SPRINT CARS and will shell out big dollars to see them on our quick 1/3 miler.
This old timer is tired after all that typing....pardon the errors.
Tom...what is the attendance capacity?

Attendance capacity? Man, you are asking a lot from a guy that watches the track and not the crowd every Saturday night (that I am there). I know I get accused of not watching the track sometimes, but that is just the way it goes..... kidding, of course. I believe, now don't quote me, that the facility will hold 2500 to 3000. But that figure could be off. They used to allow people to set up lawn chairs on the hillside, but they have stopped that with the retaining wall and landscaping, so that figure I gave could be lower now.... I too would like to see a big two day show, but we'll see what the future holds. I think that the track has gone through a lot of changes and things the last few years, but seems to still be plugging along.
