Outlaw Motor Speedway - Modified Showdown
10/01/06 at 10:04pm

Wheeler Runs off with Modified $3,000 Bounty!

OUTLAW MOTOR SPEEDWAY, 8 Miles South of Muskogee, Oklahoma & 11 Miles North of I-40 on HWY 69 -   Muskogee's Chad Wheeler lead 21 of the 35 laps but had to hold off Bixby's Greg Skaggs furious charge the final four trips around the 3/8th mile oval to take home the Modified Showdown $3,000 pay day and his second Modified A-Feature win of the 2006 season.

"I didn't have the fastest car tonight but I was the first one to the checkered flag," an excited Wheeler said after exiting in his car in victory lane."I just drove this car as hard as I could those last few laps, I knew Skaggs was coming I just held on."

The win also moves Wheeler into a three way tie with Gary Andrews and teammate Tate Cole for second in career wins at Outlaw Motor Speedway with 10.

One of the best races at OMS this season, Skaggs took the lead out of the gate ahead of Muskogee's Mike "Fuzzy" Withrow and Wheeler and looked to be picking up where he left off two weeks a go with two consecutive Modified A-Feature wins as he jetted to the lead. Wheeler countered on lap four with a pass for the lead when Skaggs spun out in turn two sending him to the back. On the restart Withrow snuck under for the lead as Wheeler and Steve Martin chased.

Withrow would lead the next 11 laps until Wheeler shot past for the lead on lap 17 down the front straight away and the rest was history, almost.

Skaggs proved that patience is the best virtue as he began a trek to the front after restarting 20th with 30 laps remaining. By lap 17 as Wheeler regained the lead, Skaggs had moved up to fifth and was closing in on the leaders.
On lap 21 Skaggs shot past Withrow and Martin for second and began to track down Wheeler.

Wheeler feeling the pressure, put his car on a rail forcing Skaggs to drive near perfect to catch him. As the two entered lap traffic on lap 31 Skaggs looked to have a run on Wheeler but as they two split lap cars Skaggs slipped back and never recovered.

Wheeler outlasted the comeback for a car length win as Skaggs pulled in second ahead of Withrow.

Last season's winner, Gentry, Arkansas Steve Holzkamper scored a eighth place finish as 2004 winner Muskogee's Tate Cole slipped to ninth and four time points champion Gary Andrews took seventh.

In the Hobby Stock Division, after 2006 points champion Muskogee's Dale Richardson exited with mechanical issues Stilwell's Eddie Martin assumed the lead on lap nine and picked up his first career Hobby Stock A-Feature win.

Hulbert's Bobby Jack Potts stole the show as his claimed his third Pure Stock A-Feature win of the 2006 season holding off Oktaha's David Vinson in the process.

Muskogee's David Whittle picked up his second Economy Modified A-Feature win of the 2006 season after he and Brandon Holdridge traded paint with two laps remaining exiting turn two. Both recovered and Whittle sped off for the win as Holdridge picked up his best finish of the season in second.
