welding
09/17/08 at 2:14pm
Has anyone ever welded on there car say to fix and bracket or something like.then had to take the third member in to get worked on that they said that they need a new set of gear because it was ached across and they were messed up? I havent been home to check it out yet but that is what cowboy said when we took it over there to get a 28 spline taken out and a 31 spline put in. 300 bucks later we get the third member back and now we are low on money to we will have to race on the 27th in santa maria

It can happen very easy. If your ground was in a location where the current was able to pass through your gear set it can arc the gears
or
the bearings very easy. The way to prevent this from happening is to always place your ground as close as possible to the area that you are going to be welding, and look at the path the current will be taking, (for instance-if you are welding on the rearend housing, never ground on one side of the gear set and weld on the other). If you were welding on the rear of the car and the ground was somewhere in front of the rearend housing, it is a posibility the current can go through the gear set and arc the gears or bearings. Anybody ever had ignition trouble after doing some welding on their car ?? I'll save that for

i did it this year jeff... same thing... cowboy gear, but yes if you weld to close to the rear end... i had never had it happen until now, not sure why, but i did mine welding the leaf spring pads on at the start of the year.

The problem was not that you were to close to the gears, it was the placement of the ground. You can weld a half inch from your gears or bearings if the ground is in the right position. AGAIN- always trace the path the current is going to follow..........(arc to ground)

I've welded on my rearend countless times. I always hook the ground to the wheel studs. I've never had an issue. was the rear end completely locked up? Even if it did tack it self together a little, it would seem putting in gear would break it instantly. I've never used cowboy gears though.

This is something that everybody should be very carefull with. There are bearings in your "U" joints, there are moving parts in your transmissions, and lots of moving parts in a motor. Arcing can occur in any or all of these places. Many motors, transmissions, or drive lines have been lost due to this and most folks never even knew it.

It does not
always
happen. Beware, your luck
will
run out, and you too will pay..............
p.s. ha ha ha --- wheel studs --- probably the worst place you can find to attach a ground. Threads = bad ground, current going through ALL moving parts = real bad. Bill, please don't give anybody welding lessons, stick to politics..........LOL
