floater rear end question
04/17/09 at 10:59am

this might sound retarded, but i just bought a new winters 9 inch floater rear end... it came to me in about 20 peices... and i didnt get any instuctions on how to put it together... i've never had to put one completly together like this before... is there any little tricks or important things i should do, as i build it? like grinding some were becuase it will wear out the seal if i dont... or somthing that i should do now so it dont give me any problumes later...

Thanks
Rich...

make sure the housing is clean. pack all the bearings with grease. install the inner bearings in the hubs then install the seals. there are two smaller seals that go in the end of the housing that will seal the axles. install those next. now put the hubs on with the outer bearings. there should be 4 spanner nuts (sometimes one side is left hand threads so figure out which nuts go where first.) and 2 lock rings. slide the hubs on with the bearings. install the first nut on to the axle with the bevel against the bearing. i usually tighten the nut up till all the play is gone then go another 1/4 to 1/2 turn. install the lock ring, bend one of the tabs over into the notch of the nut. install the second nut with the bevel facing in or how ever it fits the lock ring best. tighten it against the other nut then bend a second tab into the outer nut. there are some orings that go onto the drive plates, put the drive plates on and use the flush allen head bolts to hold them on. there are two orings for the axle caps you can put those on finger tight till you install the axles. i suggest that you get 2 inner axle seals. that is the reason for packing the bearings. they will keep all the gear oil in the third member and won't leak out on the breaks and stuff. have fun
