Roy Fisher Injured in his Wingless Sprint car
09/20/09 at 2:51am
One of our beloved racers was involved in a pretty nasty flip on the front stretch during a Wingless Sprint heat race this past evening. This particular incident involved Ricardo Rivera and Roy Fisher. Fisher's number 22 machine did a complete 360 and ended up landing upright. Ricardo Rivera's 11 sprint never left the ground and he was out of the car before his broken wheel came to rest in turn 1. Attention was immediately directed at veteran racer Roy Fisher who was visibly shaken, and unable to get out of his vehicle. He was complaining of neck and back pain along with a serious concern about not being able to breath. He was put on oxygen while still in the car. Paramedics tried to assess his condition, given the limited mobility it was deemed necessary to call in a second ambulance. He was gingerly removed after a very long time and rushed to John Muir hospital.
As of 2 AM; a fellow racer and friend of Roy Fisher stated to me the following about his condition...His oxygen level remains very low-doctors continue to have him on breathing equipment. His lungs are severely bruised. His back is broken in 3 places, they believe it is the L1 and L2 area. He remains in ICU and is on morphine to help with the pain. There was a mention of 3 months of immobility at minimum. This information came to me as they left the hospital.
I'm sure I speak for the management when I say that we are saddened to say the least at the serious nature of his injuries. We certainly wish him a speedy recovery. If you have ever had the pleasure to meet Mr. Fisher, you were guaranteed to be greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. His love of racing is refreshing as he is always a top runner but he never takes it too serious. Please, if you pray, add him to your thoughts.
There will be a donation fund and if you wish, to send cards/flowers/gifts address set up as soon as we can get it organized. As of this moment, our primary concern is his well being. I will try to keep everyone update as soon as I get any information.

UPDATE as of 9:45 AM: Roy has 4 broken bones in his upper back just below his shoulders. Doctors remain concerned about his bruised lungs. Roy continues to be on breathing equipment. He has severe abrasions to his elbows and knees due to the impact. His helmet was cracked and he has a soft tissue injury to his head. He will be fitted with a whole body cast today to stablize him. He remains in ICU.
Doctors are asking no visitors or phone calls at this time due to the nature of his condition.
A positive note; because he was wearing a Haans device he was not paralized and has full feeling in each of his extremities. Updates will be posted as we find out more information.

UPDATE AS OF 9 PM MONDAY: Roy is still in ICU. The hospital staff are keeping him heavily sedated due to the extreme levels of pain. He is unable to eat or drink since the accident; he has been "out" a majority of the time since he was admitted. The pulminary therapist visited him today and increased his oxygen levels to 40 liters. His stats remain lower than normal due to the extensive bruising to his lungs. There is a concern about pneumonia setting in if they cannot get him upright soon.
The body brace measurements were taken today, no one was available yesterday. Tuesday he will be X-Rayed and fitted with the brace. He will have to wear it for the next 3 months. Doctors are hoping for healing to come in the form of the body healing itself as oppossed to the surgical route. Once he is fitted with the removable body brace they are planning to start getting him upright and possibly standing; pain toleration will be a factor of course.
He will be at the admitting hospital for the time being but will eventually be moved over to Kaiser Permanente. They will take over the bulk of his care once he is stable enough to transport him. He has what they are calling a thorasic spine injury. His prognosis is good. He will likely have full movement but will be unable to compete in any running competitions or auto racing.
Mrs Fisher would like everyone to know how grateful she/they are for the concern and support. She spends most of the day at his bedside. Hospital staff is still limiting his visitors and phone calls.
Fundraiser information should be finalized tomorrow.

UPDATE AS OF 8 PM TUESDAY: Great news everyone!!! Today Roy was fitted with his brace and they were able to get him to a sitting position. Another positive note to mention is that he was able to eat and drink for the first time since the accident. I was told that he was coherent and stayed awake for a substantial part of the day. Mrs Fisher was very happy to see the progress that was made today and she wanted to make sure that everyone to knew the good news.
Fundraisers have made leaps today as well. We now have a bank account set-up for cash donations, Get Well Soon stickers are being made, and a location for gifts and cards to be sent to. Thanks to all who are making this possible!

UPDATE AS OF 2 PM THURSDAY: Roy has been stablized enough to move closer to home to a Kaiser Permanente facility. He has been removed from the oxygen/breathing equipment. He started therapy today. There is a chance that he may be able to go home and complete his therapy on an outpatient basis as early as tomorrow! Roy continues to amaze us, I wish him a speedy recovery.

Don't know the Fishers, never been to Antioch, no matter, prayers your way! Sounds like Roy is a fighter, but God is always good! We all take risks when we get in a car. I'll be praying for all competitors this weekend... NO INJURIES!!!

Roy is now home and making amazing progress. He continues to require serious pain medication. Due to the bruising to his lungs that he suffers from, his movements are limited as he gets extremely winded. He is mobile thanks to the body cast. Roy would like to express many heartfelt thanks and gratitude toward our racing community. I wish to thank all those that have donated and continue to donate to one of our own!

I just got home from visiting with Roy and his wife Pat.
Roy was awake and alert the entire time. He even showed me his mangled sprint car! I must say after seeing all the breaks and cracks in the framing, we may want to get a fabricator involved and create something stronger....JMO.
A medical supply company delivered multiple tanks of oxygen while I was there. They told me that he will have his first spine x-ray next Wednesday. The swelling to his abdomin, arms, and legs have all gone back to almost normal. The bruising is still quite extensive though. Imagine what his lungs look like? Yikes....
They informed me that along with the 4 breaks to his back that was previously reported he also has 7 cracks/breaks to the little knob on some of his vertabre (when you bend over it is the part that you feel poking out). These are not severe and did not cause concern for the medical attendees.
His remarkable recovery is due in part to the excellent shape that he was in prior to the accident. Roy ran a minimum 4 miles a day, maintained a very healthy diet and didn't smoke. All of these factors have helped his progress in record time, much to the amazement of the doctors.
As I was leaving, we were talking about the remaining races on the schedule. He was disappointed that he would miss the last ones. Roy said to me, " I guess I won't be racing for the rest of THIS year." He left the door open for a possible 2010 return... a true racer at heart! All bruised, battered and broken but still got that pull toward the track.
His smile never left his face the entire time...you inspire me and others Roy! Thank you

UPDATE AS OF MONDAY 10-5-09 9PM:
If you attended the races this past weekend, you may have heard that Roy Fisher was taken back to the hospital earlier that day. He was complaining of severe stomach pain that the medication he was given was not alleviating. He had also lost his appetite and it was noticed that when he stood he would loose all his coloring and would "turn yellow".
Upon being readmitted, Roy was initially under pain management/control. Doctors immediately started antibiotics for a suspected infection on his pancreas and hoped it would help his gall bladder. The gall bladder turned out to be unsavable with antibiotics as gangreen had already set in. Doctors were fearing tears in his liver, pancreas and bile ducts. Each of these would have been a traumatic injury to the human body. Doctors are saying this is a direct result from the crash that he was involved in. The pancreas, liver and the bile ducts were all in satisfactory condition as of this posting.
Roy underwent surgery to remove the deadened gall bladder today. While under anesthesia, they also repaired a hernia that had developed. His prognosis is good and doctors are pleased with the outcome so far.
There is a possibility that Mr. Fisher will be able to return home on Wednesday. Let's keep those prayers coming!

I spoke with Mrs. Fisher this week.
Roy is doing amazingly well and continues to make incredible strides of improvement. He has started running again; short distances for now. He still isn't 100% but he is getting there.
We are all better people for having him in our lives. Continued health and improvement Roy!
