Random Fact
02/22/10 at 9:17pm
"Americans put almost as much fossil fuel into our refrigerators as our cars. We are consuming about 400 gallons of oil a year per citizen--about 17% of our nation's energy use--for agriculture, a close second to our vehicular use.
Getting the crop from seed to harvest takes only one fifth of the total oil used for our food. The lion's share is consumed during the trip from the farm to your plate. Each food item in a typical U.S. meal has traveled an average of 1,500 miles. In addition to direct transport, other fuel-thirsty steps include processing (drying, milling, cutting, sorting, baking) packaging, warehousing, and refrigeration. Energy calories consumed by production, packaging and shipping far outweigh the energy calories we receive from the food.
A quick way to improve food-related fuel economy would be to buy a quart of motor oil and drink it. More palatable options are available.
If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels or oil every week. That's not gallons, but barrels. Small changes in buying habits can make big differences. Becoming a less energy-dependent nation may just need to start with a good breakfast.

Hmmmm, didn't know them organic cows walked to the slaughter house. Got news for ya, when I was growin' up, all our cows were organic. I don't like bugs in by food so I don't buy organic veggies. Most all the meat we buy is Ca. grown and you can only buy stuff thats in season if you buy locally. Whats the folks in Illinois eat in the winter? Snow?

Don't you know you're supposed to wash the veggies before you eat them? Goes for organic or not. Main difference, your veggies won't have all the chemicals and pesticides sprayed on them.
Think the main point is, if you have the choice between an orange from some foreign place, or somewhere local, choose the local. Not only are you boosting the local economy, but you are saving oil in the long run etc etc. Obviously some places are only going to have so many options when it comes to organic and locally grown foods. But, of course you have to over analyze everything and find the wrong instead of looking at the overall point trying to be shown.

OK OK I'll walk to the market next time. But I still ain't buyin' organic veggies. Several of the local farms are my customers, wouldn't want to put them out of business. That would hurt employment and futher kill the local economy. Not a darn thing wrong with you doin' your part.

Organic veggies have pesticides on them.......just a different kind. Its all a semi- scam.
One of the best laws enacted, was the one that makes grocery stores state where produce is grown. I've noticed in Az. for instance, green onions are generally grown in the US.......while at Vons here in Santa Maria, they are grown and imported from Mexico......... I refuse to buy foreign produce.

Organic fruits and veggies put off a lot more energy than other kinds. In the documentary, "A beautiful truth" They show "gamma rays?" off a processed fruit, a non organic fruit and an organic fruit. The processed fruit was virtually dead, the non organic fruit had an fizzy charge but the organic fruit was glowing like the sun with energy. We actually gas tomatoes to make them ripen and add things to make their weight increase.
I'll take organic meat any day. Organic usually means that they are range fed rather than packed in on a dairy walking around in their own feces. It also means the meat isn't loaded with antibiotics and hormones. The meat tastes way better than typical dairy meat. If you can get it.

The difference between organic meat is this style which is typical. Corn fed and hormone/antibiotic injected like this:
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://blog.kievukraine.info/3654B.jpg&im...
and the type of cattle you see on 166 which are grass fed like these:
http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/4901434/cattle-main_Full.jpg
If you can get organic, get it if you can pay for it. It's not a political agenda. I don't think it's the red meat that's so bad for you. It's the red meat filled with hormones and antibiotics that screw everyone up.

Born and raised on a farm in South Dakota, NEVER heard it called dairy meat. We had a small dairy, our cattle were grass fed in the summer and alfalfa and corn fed in the winter. When the cow no longer produced it went to the slaughter house, usually at the time Armour Star. Where it went from there, who knows. Spam?

Dairy cows have been shot up with so many hormones it's not funny. That's possibly why young girls are starting their menstrual cycles and maturing younger than ever. For our daughter I think she was 11..or 12.

We talked about that in health class once. The teacher summed it up that both boys and girls are developing at a faster rate becuase they are receiving more nutrients. Obesity rate is up, but kids are consuming more nutrients/minerals/etc than before. If you look at poor countries that don't receive the nutrients they need, they hit puberty at a much later time period than kids that get what they need. Wouldn't shock me though that the hormones injected into food would be a problem as well.
A classmate shared this link. It's in China, so the culture is completely different and they eat different foods, but its interesting take on it.

Interesting article. But coming out of China I dont trust it.
The whole Porn angle? My daughter was never exposed to porn of any kind so I dont buy into that at all
And as far as nutritious diets go, Kids in America are probably getting less nutrition. The body will process and use the nutrients as needed for a healthy body. The rest of will be passed through with out being used or absorbed into the system.
The hormone angle makes more sense to me, I write that article off as Government propaganda to hide the fact that our food is shot with chemicals to produce more milk and grow fatter animals for market.

I think it would go beyond just porn. Kids are exposed to sex and everything that goes with it at a younger age than before. From cartoons, to the internet, to music. I worked with Kindergartners in high school and one kid was banned from the after school program becuase he would pole dance and sing On the Hotline by Pretty Ricky. Some of it might come down to parenting, censoring what they hear/see. But its something that is ranked highly in society so it can be seen or heard about almost anywhere.

AHHH - but there is where you are in error. Those people you speak of (the ones making a choice), would not chose range fed meat, they would most likely choose to graze with the bovines........lol. You know -- all that tasty grass and flowers that are so healthy for ya........lol. I personally am a "meat eater", and I couldn't give a squat whether it comes from the range or the feed lot, I'm WAAAY to old to start worrying about that stuff.

Steph, I know what you are getting at BUT I dont see how that would cause children to
physically
mature faster like the article states.

Should have clarified, I'm not all to convinced as well. But its a theory out there. There isn't anything yet that has been proven to be the cause, just possibilities.
"Being obese or overweight, which has been associated with premature puberty, may be one potential cause. Others include genetics, low birthweight, poor diet, lack of activity, and surprisingly, an absentee father or a non-relative male in the house have also been offered as explanations."
Makes sense to me.
