California spends $43,287 annually on a prisoner. According to the California Department of Education the average per pupil expense for the 07-08 school year was $8,594.

The amount we spend on prisoners is amazing to me but that is a different crisis.

So is the amount we spend on education.  If your $8500 figure is correct (and I suspect it is) that means that we spend $170,000 on each class of 20 students (most classes have more than 20 students).  We may pay the teacher $60k.  That leaves $110,000 for overhead expenses.  I understand there are supplies & books to be bought and school up keep.  Seems like we should be able to do that for a lot less than $110k.  The problem is not that we don't have the funding.  The problem is that we waste a lot of the funding.

In my opinion, private school costs less than public and nets better results.

Catholic school 1st through 8th grade, lost my virginity in the 7th grade...... that was in the early 70's, not that much has changed.
And the girl was the one who initiated the act. ( she was an 8th grader )

I remember ( public school ) girls that were pretty developed in the 7th and 8th grade back then wearing tube tops to school ( darn I loved those tube tops).......

I had to walk past 2 public schools to get to my private school, those darn salt and pepper pants and white shirt and tie got me into more scraps than anything.

I know, being raised catholic my parents never talked about sex to me or either of my brothers, we were left to explore for ourselves.

I don't have kids but both my brothers do and they are very open and engaging in these talks, and I think it's a good thing.

I also wanted to add, that the buddy in question was also in high school at the time. I didn't know him myself in school, but he knows every single person I've ever met from Elementary through high school.

I think my point was that you may think your doing your kid justice by spending all the money for a "good school", but you sure better prepare your kid for the same perils of public school. The school in question in my case is the high desert's biggest and most pretigious private/christian school. Not some run down charter school or sumtin.
