EIGHT DIFFERENT DIVISIONS SATURDAY AT PERRIS – AUGUST RAFFLE WINNER GETS TO RACE(AUGUST 10, 2010, PERRIS, CA) This Saturday night, August 14th, Perris Auto Speedway will host the eight different divisions of racecars. The PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Modifieds, Sport Mods, California Lightning Sprint Cars, CDCRA Dwarf Cars, NMRA ¾ Midgets and the Pick-A-Part Factory Stocks. Irwin Markwardt, the lucky winner from the August raffle where fans get a chance to race, will participate in hot laps, a six-lap heat race and the 15-lap Factory Stock main event. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday and the first race will be at 5:30.
Fans attending Saturday’s race can enter the raffle to race on September 11th at The PAS. At intermission, two names will be drawn. One for the winner and one for the alternate in case the winner does not show. Fans have to be 16 or older and have a valid drivers license to participate.
“The first ”Raffle to Race” promotion went over very well last month,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter Kazarian said. “Better than we expected and we think it will gain in popularity as time goes on. Just think, a fan can go out and be part of the actual racing program with no experience whatsoever. You could not do that in NASCAR, the NFL or Major League Baseball. And, what fan would want to step into the ring with Manny Pacquiao?”
“Irwin is a great guy,” Kazarian said about the first raffle winner. “It could not have gone to a nicer person. Everybody at the track likes Irwin. He is here every race driving a push truck and he also takes pictures for the drivers. He will do anything he is asked to help with the show. I am really glad he is the first person to get a shot and I think he may do well.”
For Markwardt, an effervescent, 49-year-old, who lives in Anaheim, it will not be his first shot at racing at The PAS. He was a regular in the Sport Compact class when it was introduced in the 2003 season, but has not raced anything since. “I already have butterflies,” he said with a laugh over the phone on Monday afternoon. “I have not driven anything since the Sport Compact, but this car has a lot more horsepower than that. I plan to be competitive and try to not put any dents in it, but I know that probably will not happen.”
When asked if he thought he had a chance of winning the “Raffle to Race” when he entered last month, Markwardt said, “I just did it for giggles and to support the track. If I won, great, but if I did not, no big deal. But, I am glad I won and get the chance to race on Saturday. It will be a lot of fun.”
“I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when they see Irwin drive,” Kazarian said. “While it has been seven years since he has raced, he knows what he is doing, he knows and loves dirt track racing and he is going to be in a very good car. It is going to be interesting.”
