What is the easiest/cleanest way to refill 9" housing??
09/21/10 at 8:01am
Can somebody give me input on what is the quickest and cleanest method of filling up the third member with gear oil? I have the inner axle seals installed, so it does not need too much gear oil.
Every time I change gears, it's a messy and time consuming job to refill. I am thinking some kind of cannister to fill with oil and connect it to an air compressor??
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Theo

Throughout my racing years I found that the easiest and cleanest way to do it was to have someone else do it .....................

Weld a 3/4" bung into the top of the cover, then run a hose up through the deck connected to a breather/cannister. Or........do what OS6 said. lol

To continue Fcg's idea, with a canister bolted to the deck, you can turn a bottle of gear oil upside down in it and walk away. Just let gravity do the rest. Easiest way I've ever seen. It wasn't on my car, therefor I was jealous.

After I but the third member and one axle in the housing I jack up the axle tube without the axle and pour the gear oil in the axle tube. Actually, I squirt it in a quart at a time using a one quart gear oil container. It takes a couple of minutes. Then I install the axle before I let the axle tube back down. It works great.

Auto parts stores and probably hardware stores sell these small pumps for gear oil that thread right onto the top of the gallon. Works great for manual tranny's too. The picture is from Amazon if you cant find it.

1.5 hose x 4 = 2
+
1.5 inch fitting x 3 inches long fitting at Home depot = 2.00
Then fill it from the deck lid
