most would say 5.83 is the best starting point. but it all depends on the motor combination.
i was up to a 6.20 and never broke 7000rpm.
i know other guys running 7500rpm on a 5.67. at least they claim!  Undecided

If you're running a ton of hp, you'd be looking at a taller gear. I never had a lot of hp. Probably in the 400-450 range. I ran 6.00's and could go to any track without breaking 7000rpm. It's tire spin that'll kill you.
The trans doesn't matter. They're all 1:1 in go gear.

talking about what gear to run, at Bakersfield it always go's of the motor that you are running, and what kind of power your making, at the start of the season in winter time when the track is fast and hooked up we run a 567 or 583 with a 383 or 406 and turn around 8000 and in the summer when the track get slick and slows down we run a 600 and sometimes 620 and turn the same rpm's   but thats changing this year with the new rule that we have to run a 7800 chip its going to change our package a little, we will still start with a 583 and see how it go's

scott, how much difference do you think a 360 limit and a 500 cfm 2bbl on gas would make gear wise, compared to your current packages?

I would try a 567 to start with, when we run a small CI motor we run a 620 gear, with a motor that make's around 550 hp, I think that a 567 would be a good starting point, do you no if there is a rpm chip rule for the sport mods, with the motor rule and a 2 bbl carb  you'll turn around 6700 with a 567.
