checking square on a mod reaerend

just pulled the rearend out of the mod to see what i have and measured the toe out at the rotors( rotor to rotor) and was wondering how much is to much toe in or out....

it should be straight up, if not then possibly then its bent.

The rotor is a pretty small circle to check it with. I used to vise grip a 2' or 3' piece of angle or square tubing to each rotor. You'll have a better idea what's going on then. It "should" be 0, but they almost never are. If you've got a torch, sponge and bucket of water, you can straighten it.

Heat a silver dollar sized spot cherry red hot, then cool it with a sponge. Good luck.

where are you located? there is a guy here in bakersfield that has a rear end jig... if there is some doubt that it may be bent, then spend the extra money and have it checked the correct way.

If your axels slide in and out easy I wouldn't be too worried about it.  Dirt tires deform so much on a race track you probably wouldn't even know it if it's under 1/8th of an inch.  You're more likely to take the strength out of the steel if you're not careful.  If it has camber in the RR which happens over time I'd leave it.  Some people actually buy rear ends with camber built in.

Old school way i learned from my dad years ago & it really works. Can even do it at the track. Measure tow from front rotor to rotor then rear of rotor to rear of rotor. Subtract the difference. If the front is 55" & the rear is 55 1/2"  then your towed in 1/2".  Just go to the longer (towed out side) and weld a bead at a pretty hot temp without burning through. Tubes are usually pretty thick so you can get them hot. Weld in the center of the tube or towards where you may be visualbly able to see the bend especially if you know what direction it got hit like from the front or the rear. Do the weld about 2" long & let it cool. Then measure. The heat from the weld will draw the metal the opposite direction. Weld on it til your satisfied its straight enough. Weld on top of the weld you made or above or below. And let it cool & recheck it. I have done this many times at the track right in the car. Once it was so bad i rubbed an axle in half got it out & v ground it clamped it welded the axle back together ground it smooth. Welded on the tube. Put it back together. Started in the back & ran 2nd.  If the snout is bent that's a different story But this fix can aid that too. Good luck. Tongue

thanks for all the help... i really got screwed bad on this car and its taken every dime i have to get this thing started....parts that were (given) to me to make the deal happen were pure junk,  tilton clutch(junk), shocks ( junk) rear end (junk) wheels and tires (junk).third member ( junk) so now im looking for a clutch, third member, wheels , tires, and then i have to fab panels.  thanks again , i will post how it went... AND IT WAS MY BROTHER-IN-LAW I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM..................IM GOING TO WHIP HIS ASS AND MAKE HIM CRY WITH HIS OLD CAR Cry..........

saw ron hornaday do that at terry henry's race prep here n bako. thought it was pretty cool.

i have found that with the rearend out of the car you can bolt up some wheels. with it on the ground or a large table. you can spin the housing and watch the wheels move in & out. good luck.

Or take it to Speedway Engineering and they will fix it on a jig. Sylmar Ca.
