Stud Girdles.  Does it matter?

I've never used them in the past.  Thinking about getting some put on.  Worth it on a flat tappet cam?

It has a lot to do with spring pressure too. Lift, RPM and spring pressure are the factors to consider. We're all spinning outrageous RPM, so what's your lift and what's the seated and open spring pressures?

Far less important with steel heads and good screw-in studs.  If you have not had a problem in the past, I would say save the $$$$$....

i did a bunch of reading about them before i got mine... and i came up with this...

theres no performance gain from them... but theres a few mechanical gains you get from them...

they will eleminate any chance of the studs or the poly locks from backing off... so theres no chance of the valves nuts coming loose and losing a cylinder or even worse, a push rod coming loose enough to do damage to the head or block...

also, they tie everything together to make it all act as one solid piece which makes your valve train alot stonger... lets face it, we put these motors thru hell and back every time we get on the track... so why not make the motor a little stronger...

IMO... the hundred bucks is well worth the added strength...

We always ran stud girdles just to help with the harmonics in the valve train and give us a little insurance. They are not absolutely neccessary as in a roller cam deal, but we did break a 7/16" screw in stud years ago and it cost us going out for the last 33 laps at the Don Roberts back in the late 90's...LOL Extra insurance for a flat tappet cam that has enough spring pressure to turn 8000 rpm all night....IMHO...

And if you don't have enough spring pressure to turn 8 grand all night long, get the stud girdles and springs so you can.  Oh, wait, wouldn't that be a performance advantage?  There is almost always a performance advantage to a mechanical crutch.  Just because you have stud girdles, doesn't mean you'd run heaver springs---------------------------------ya, right.  Hence the reason for the rule in IMCA.
