Probably can.  An old trick when the axles won't go in all the way is to back off the bolts holding in the pumpkin a bit and loosen it up a little. Then see if the axles will go.  We've done it several times over the years when tubes, housings or whatever are a little tweaked and this often works.  Don't forget the drain pan, nothing like a face full of stinky rear end lube.  Good luck.
