SCOTT BUSBY’S FOUR DECADE DOMINANCE CONTINUES

Chalk up feature win number 458 for Scott Busby, California’s most winning stock car driver. Busby blasted by Iowa’s Kellen Chadwick and fought off spectacular moves by young champion Troy Foulger to win the DIRTcar West modified stock car main event at Antioch Speedway Saturday night.

The speedway’s six division “Big Show” had thrills and spills with more than 70 cars competing in non-stop racing action for three hours, ending before 10 p.m.

Dan Gonderman of Antioch led green to checkered flag in the Wingless Sprint car division, despite second place Dave Press of San Matteo, Calif. closing the gap late in the event. Press weaved his sprint car through lapped traffic in a valiant attempt to run down Gonderman, who was untouchable running the high groove of the racetrack. Billy Macedo of Concord, Calif. chased Press across the line for third.

There were a few early tangles in the DIRTcar modified main event, but when the field settled, Busby made his move by Foulger and Chadwick. Chadwick, originally from Oakley, Calif. was back home for the holiday weekend and picked up a “ride” for the night. He looked strong early in the event, but left the feature with the car having mechanical problems. Busby had Foulger on the attack - he raced high and low on the track, but in the waning moments of the feature it was all Busby. San Anselmo’s Michael Paul fought through the pack, topping Keith Brown, Sr. of Pittsburg, Calif. for third. Sean O’Gara of Fairfield, Calif. was fifth.

The second spectacular wreck in two weeks came in the Dwarf Car division. Just after a large, live, wild rabbit successfully darted across the track in front of the feature pack of cars at full speed, leaders Ryan Winters and Ricardo Rivera came together at full speed on the backstretch, both flipping violently several times. Neither driver was injured. After the red flag, Spanky Grenert took the win, followed by Nick Squatritto and Tony Carmignani.

Jim Freethy topped Brad Myers in the Pure Stock Car main event. Fred Ryland out-dueled Ken Rhoades in the Limited Late Model Stock Car main event. Justin Silveira dominated the “Four-Banger” feature, with Frank Furtado finishing second.
