Sprint Car Races, Sat. 7/28, observations as a fan
07/31/12 at 11:14am
First of all, they moved the front gate to where the OTB patrons used to park FOR FREE, yet folks like me--and there were plenty--didn't know that, so we kept driving north to where the main entrance TRADITIONALLY HAS BEEN. How about a sign stating, "The PAS entrance, HERE"? Then again, now it's $8 for the privilege of parking? Inland Motor Speedway, home of Friday night Speedway racing, doesn't charge ANYTHING...and it's on fairgrounds property, too. Then agin, $25 for a regular Saturday night show, that the announcer admitted was a little light, thus no 4th heat race or a consi? Trust me, many people in-line were more than a little shocked at the cost.
On the plus side, glad to see a good crowd on-hand, perhaps 4,000, in my unofficial guestimate. And I love the concept of the senior sprints: it's NOT just limited to Chevy engines and either Goodyear or Hoosier tires: truly a run what ya' brung class. And, hey, with 8 cars, that's more than Madera's had for super-modifieds the past few years. Hope this division keeps growing and growing.
Suggestions to track management: the Ontario Reign called ME for my fan input last week. When has a short-track ever done that? I told them I liked the fact that they start as-advertised. The first race Sat. night didn't get underway 'til 7:23, not 7:00. And the "last man standing" format (which was borrowed from Speedway bikes) is fine,
but keep the show going: no down-time in the pits. Make the cars stay out on the track 'til there's an eventual winner. KEEP THINGS MOVING AT ALL TIMES; yes, as the Reign does with blimps dropping coupons, and people in Section 107 gettings free haircuts, and kiss cams, and music, music, music, etc. And, once again, no shooting a few t-shirts out into the stands? Remember, every PAS t-shirt is free promotion, a walking billboard to attract the attention of others.
Also, save all the of the main event trophy winners until AFTER the last checkered flag has flown. In the interest of condensing time and being courteous to the fans who spent their $25 for admission. The sponsors will still get their due, just not during what should be "show time".
And as a former Speeday rider and perpetual fan, it was nice of the announcer to keep mentioning IMS and Costa Mesa and Industry for other racing options. Keep up the good work. Good to do a shout-out for the open wheel races at Victorville Sun. 8/19, too.
I know it's partly the economy, but things have taken a turn for the worse the past decade. Back when Ronnie Shuman's assocation ran the sprint div., they raced every other Saturday night, with B and C mains, and oft-times with late-model cars and/or PAS Trucks as a support series. Oh, but to be able to go back in time.
Oh well, for now, Perris IS the only regular auto ractrack in the greater LA area, so I'll support it as best I can. Just wish they'd bring back the late-models and the Legends on the HALF-MILE and, wishing out loudly, a real AMA-sanctioned flat-track race, too. Sigh... As I used to say in Radio in Palm Springs, "Thanks for listening!"

Addendum: the announcer mentioned a race on Thanksgiving at the track, but not, as I was hoping, "The Turkey Night Grand Prix", but junk cars. Too bad "the successor to Ascot" isn't holding what's supposed to be a DIRT race for midgets and sprints. How paved Irwindale ever got that gig, I'll never understand.

Where is Turkey Night going to be this year since Irwindale is kaput on the oval track? The new track in bako maybe...supposed to open late fall...

Hey, stranger. How are things?
Yes, but the new track near BuckOwensville is also asphalt. Turkey Night was supposed to be a traditional dirt open-wheel race.
And, yes, per the "King of the Wing" deal at Oswego recently, at least for that one night, a winged sprinter proved to be faster than winged supers, but non-wing sprints on pavement are pretty much follow-the- leader racing until one by one they burn-off the right rear.

Turkey night gran prix has always been on Thanksgiving night. The ”junk cars” also known as street stocks are running Friday and Saturday and is in no way related to the open wheel turkey night. Turkey night will be at irwindale on Thursday night.

You have to excuse Lefty, he is a true sprint car elitist. The real "push'em flip 'em wait for 'em to clean up this mess" crowd consider late models 'junky old taxi-cabs', and other open wheel cars (other than sprints) to be 'pea shooters' and a just a nuisance, as well as waste of their precious time....

Slip: re-read my initial comments, or some under "late-model racer";
my favorite racing div. IS the dirt late-models and/or the DIRT mod's back in NY. Being slower and heavier than sprint cars, there's more head-to-head competition, and unlike the pavement "taxi-cabs", they have no problem tradin' a little paint from time to time. I'm quite frustrated that around the rest of the country this series is fairly-successful, but my local half-mile, The PAS, hasn't run 'em for years, and car count at places like Oildale doesn't run in the 30-40's as in years past. But as far as bomber stocks, claimer stocks, street stocks, pony stocks, etc., yeah, not something I'd pay to watch. Heck, when Perris let the Legends cars run on the half-mile (which one of their top drivers told me recently many of his competitors are intimidated to do), they put on as good a show as anyone, and faster than so-called "super-stocks". So, as Paul Harvey used to say, "And now you know...the REST...of the story. Good....day!"

Lefty,
I was just trying to explain to the kid how it is with the sprint car fan. I know, because I have been racing pea-shooters and 'so-called' superstocks in races nobody wanted to see on the half at Perris , and 'back in New York' as well, for the last 25 years.... Attitude is still the same.
