Starter/ flywheel issues
11/03/12 at 5:57pm
INPUT NEEDED:
I am in the process of putting my sport mod together and I am having nothing but problems with the starter and flywheel. I have a crate/powerglide set up. I have tried 4 different starters and 2 different flywheels. It grinds like you have never heard before. We have tried shims on both hole mounts, one side and vice versa. NOTHING is helping it. We got it as good as it has been and the starter stays engaged in the flywheel while the motor is running. I can't figure out why it would do this!! ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY HELPFULL!!!
Thanks,
Bryan

How is solenoid connected? Are you using the flywheel that the recommend in the paperwork that came with the crate?

Check to see if you have at least .030 clearance between the starter gear and the flywheel or flexplate when it's not engaged. If that's the case you might need Quicktime's flywheel shims to get the flywheel back a little. Got that on one of our engines right now. Come in a 5 pack to space as necessary. Summit has them for $18.

Maybe a solenoid problem?

14088765 flex plate automatic
14088650 flywheel standard
These are the numbers for the 153 tooth plates in the manual. Is this what you're using and do you have the correct side towards the block? They are specific for what side faces out.
