How many weekly dirt track teams have crew chiefs? Crew chiefs that make adjustment decisions and performance decisions? Ones that  help prep the car and make sure its ready to go.

I feel being one really helps are race team a good set of eyes outside the car during a race telling the driver how the car looked and getting feedback from the driver to make adjustments needed.

How many crew chiefs make the calls on what to do to the car at the local short track level?

Down on the local level, very few crewchiefs make setup calls on their own. At best, it's a collaberation between driver/chief. Sometimes an inexperienced driver will allow the crewchief to make the calls if he has been around a long time. Also, a good crewchief can delegate tasks to the other crew members to get things done before a main event. We all know how hectic it can get between heats or B mains and the main event itself.

For years I had my cousin as my Crew Chief.  He did most of the work on the car, prepared and made adjustments if needed a the track.  We would talk about it and he would ask me what I thought but usually did what he wanted.  He would tell me to just shut up and go drive.. LOL..  Grin

It was very nice and wished I had him still full time..  Less stressful and I could relax and get my stuff ready.
