Winged War Sat at Marysville; Wiesz could be spoiler in title chase

MARYSVILLE, CA (August 22) - The mighty Winged Pacific Sprint Cars will headline the show this Saturday night at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park. It will be Richmond Gear night at the races. The MRP Super Stocks, Hobby Stocks and the Pro 4 Sprinters will return to the venerable raceway as well in championship point racing competition.

The 3-way fight at the top of the Winged Pacific Sprint Car Series remains tight with a fair sized twist to be added to the mix for the final races on the 2013 schedule. There is also a knot at the top of the MRP Super Stock standings. Lady racing star Misty Castleberry has an opportunity to put to rest any question as to who will be the 2013 Pro 4 titlist. The Hobby Stock war between local drivers Eddie Hammett and defending MRP champ Jeremy Hammons renews Saturday as well.

In the MRP Winged Sprint Car class championship point leader Billy Wallace of Grass Valley in Mark Moore’s black hot rod remains in control at this point. He won last Saturday night. This week he will look to extend his lead on Grass Valley’s Jeremy Burt. Burt is still 2nd in the standings in his Geico Sprint Car, 31 points off the pace. Burt has had a peculiar mid season after a dominating early season run. With 3 races left on the schedule and a 50 point swing available at each event, anything is possible. But, Burt has to go, and go right now; and have a little luck as well. Luck is something Burt has had little of in this unusually difficult 2013 mid season. Burt is well known for late season charges as in last year’s quest for the title that fell just short of success. Fan favorite “The Madman” Mike Monahan in his Superior Hydraulics Sprinter out of Sparks, Nevada is still in the hunt. He lies 39 points behind. He is 3rd in the standings and needs a couple of spectacular nights if he’s to have a chance at his 2nd title in the series. Monahan is also a 4 time Montana State champion. Each of the top 3 has won this year and each has been a champion at MRP. Wallace is looking for his 3rd consecutive title and has 27 main event wins in the winged cars. Only arch-rival Colby Wiesz of Colfax in the Wiesz Motorsports #21 has 3 MRP Winged Sprint Car titles. Wiesz won his titles consecutively.

Speaking of Wiesz, the Colfax Comet is coming to MRP for the final shows of 2013. In an up and down season in which he suffered mechanical problems throughout, Wiesz is not a contender for the title. However, he could be the spoiler in all of this. Last time Wallace and Wiesz were on the raceway together they were slugging it out up the front chute at 100 mph with parts and sparks flying. Wiesz came out on top in that one. That was the Dozier Classic two weeks ago. With all time feature event winner Wiesz in the mix this situation becomes volatile. Wiesz has won 52 main events at MRP.

800 horse power racecars and rivalries, with a title on the line? This is getting thick. This is getting good.

MRP’s own “5-time” champion Korey Lovell of Yuba City will be in the house. Lovell has 37 victories in his career at MRP. Lovell hammered the front stretch wall in his heat race last week, severely damaging his Yuba City Scrap and Steel #71. Marysville’s Performance Auto Supply team with veteran drivers Derek and Brandon Dozier will have a great shot at a win. Brandon won this year and, after a long dry streak, is again one of the fastest drivers competing. Veteran Jimmy Steward of Auburn will be in the field again. Veteran Peter Paulson from Woodland is also a threat and has won this season as well.

Once again, two remarkable lady sprint car stars are expected. Orland’s Reyna Krueger is a 4 time winner in the winged sprint cars. Krueger had a nasty crash last Saturday night flipping several times in a grinding, wing ripping melee. Rookie of the Year sensation Raquel Hall will be looking for her 1st trip to victory lane.

Oroville’s Heath Hall was 2nd in the Dozier Classic 3 weeks ago after a great late race pass on point leader Wallace. He will return in the Hight Motorsports entry. Hall has two 2nds and two 3rds in his last 4 outings. Hall is overdue for another trip to victory lane.

In addition to the $1000 in cash for the feature event winner, the Legal Shield Quick Time Shootout will pay $100 for fast time at this event. The Contingency Connection Bonus program will offer some $1100 in additional bonuses to the winner.


Auburn’s Ray Trimble will try to hold off the challenges of local favorites Sean Hulsey, Brad Magenheimer and the tenacious Cort Dozier. Dozier lost the point lead when consecutive mechanical failures hampered his season. The same holds true for James Castleberry. Castleberry is the most recent winner in the class and he, too, had the point lead when consecutive mechanical failures dashed his hopes for a title.

Hulsey and Magenheimer (son of the 2 time champ George Magenheimer) have both been the picture of consistency in the class though they have not won; enter Trimble, who has won and remained consistent. It should be a fender bending good time with the Supers at MRP Saturday night.

The pit gate opens at 3PM. Grandstands open at 5PM. Hot Laps are at 5:45 with qualifying scheduled for 6:30. Racing begins after qualifying.
