Got the numbers I gave, 70# aluminum, 80# steel, from an old tire/wheel guy that knew his stuff.  Did some digging on this and it's surprising how few wheel manufacturers give torque recommendations on their racing wheels. You can find numbers for about any size passenger car or truck.  Basset is one of the few that does and they say 85# on their steel wheels and Basset has one of the stronger center sections of any wheels out there.
ARP gives a strength value on a 5/8 170,000/190,000 stud of 210 lbs. but darned few, if any, wheels' centers are that strong.  The 45 degree lug angle on racing wheels ups the clamping force way over the 60 degree stuff  that's common on street wheels.  Gunning them on to over 220 lbs. is tough on the coined holes on the wheels , the nuts and the wheel studs themselves. Of course that's what nearly all of us do at the track and then we wonder why our wheel wobbles...if it lasts that long without a hit.
The best idea is to take the time and torque them on at home when new and try not to get too enthusiastic with the gun at the track.

Torque wrench makes zero difference if you don't even look at the wheel.... Wink

From my best recolection, sense my mid twenties to now, 65 next month, I have had 5 loose wheels.  Now all that racing and and five loose wheels ain't bad, concidering evertyone of them were from not even looking at them, like I said Torque wrench would make zero difference.  How many times this year have you seen a NASCAR Cup car have a loose wheel at the biginning of the race, after the initial grean, I believe there have been three.  They torque theirs before they start....No sure way, Ole Millwaukie as good as any.  I have one car to take care of, you have four, you re-torque after each time you pull the wheels off?  We had ours off a minimum of six times last Sat night....

everytime before the car hits the track, torque, pressures, mud plugs. I try not to hammer on the lugnuts that hard, carbon fiber lugnuts don't like that so I have to use a torque wrench .

And I must say, I usually have some help at the track so it isn't something I always have to do myself, but I do make sure it was done, peace of mind is priceless .
