McDaniel, Hall & Skidmore nab Taxi Cab dough at Marysville
by Bob Burbach MARYSVILLE, CA (October 19) - Marysville’s Ryan McDaniel picked up his 3rd MRP Great Taxi Cab Open in his last 4 tries in the Limited Late Model feature at Marysville Raceway Park Saturday. Yuba City’s Corey Hall won a huge victory in the Super Stock feature as Jesse Skidmore took the checkers in a wild Hobby Stock main event. Paul and Kathy Hawes hooked up facility hosted 62 entries in the 3 divisions in the final event of 2013. The large, vocal crowd was the biggest of the year to witness stock car racing at MRP.
McDaniel came from deep in the Late Model feature starting order. Then an early race, 3-car pile-up almost cost him a shot at the victory. McDaniel was launched into the air during the incident. At the new green, early leader Jeff Olschowka put about a straightaway between himself and the rest of the field. In the first 7 scored laps McDaniel was a rocket. He easily carved his way into 2nd and reeled in Olschowka.
At ½ way McDaniel used a high side ride on the 3rd turn cushion and a diamond off of 4 to draw side by side with Olschowka. McDaniel got a nose on Olshowka and it was all over from there. Olschowka stayed 2nd at the checkers as last year’s winner Matt Michelli, of Live Oak, finished 3rd.
Duane Cleveland, Matt Davis and Michelli grabbed the heat race victories.
In the Super Stock main event, mid-pack starter Hall also carved his way to the front as he diced with Cort Dozier. Both drivers were on a mission to catch front row starter Ray Trimble, the current MRP champion in the division and rocket-fast Mark Garner. Garner kept Trimble at bay as Dozier endured a succession of flat tires and made several pit stops during yellow flag slow downs. Remarkably, he remained on the same lap as the race plodded through an unusual series of caution periods.
Early race leader Garner from Santa Rosa faded by mid way and Trimble took over with what seemed like an insurmountable lead. Hall had reached 2nd and a restart at lap 12 gave Hall his opportunity. But, Trimble was in no mood to be passed. Trimble and Hall had a wicked duel that lasted some 5 laps. They were side by side and the crowd went wild.
Dozier, with new life, got to 3rd and was reeling in the leaders when Trimble stumbled and Dozier flashed by. Dozier didn’t have enough time to challenge Hall as Hall flew under starter Don Dunlap’s checkered flag. It was a bizarre, but thrilling event as only 8 of the 20 starting cars finished the fender crunching event. James Castleberry, Matt Magenheimer and Garner grabbed heat race honors.
The Hobby Stock closer was even more bizarre as ½ of the 20 cars that started the 20 lapper did not finish. A remarkable number of crashes and spins changed the face of this one almost continuously.
Dominic Stone of Placerville pretty much had everybody covered until a late race red flag crash in traffic altered the outcome considerably. The top 3 drivers in the event made pit stops or were towed away in the lap 7 melee.
Skidmore, who was a competitive 4th when the red light flashed on, was the leader when the green flag waved for the final 8 laps. He was pressed by Eddie Hammett, but held on for the richest victory of the hobby stock season. Stone, Phillip Shelby and Matt Magenheimer won the heat races.
The Farnham Farms Fast Dash for Late Models was won by Michelli. The Performance Auto Supply Fast Dash for the Supers was won by Trimble. The McDaniel Motorsports Fast Dash for the Hobby Stocks was won by Shelby. The Marysville Flea Market Slow Dashes were won by George Magenheimer in the Late Models, Kyle Allen in the Hobby Stocks and Lance Delozier in the Supers.
Next up at MRP is the annual Racer’s Swap Meet. That event will be on Saturday morning November 23rd. Stay tuned
