new class in hanford.
12/18/13 at 4:22pm
We are starting a new class for Kings Speedway and would like to get the word out. This class will be called the Mod 4's. It will have an a-mod body and a sport-mod suspension, all IMCA legal. But instead of the common SBC, we will be using a 4cyl motor and a stock trans. One of the benefits of this car is that every thing is IMCA legal with the exception of the motor and trans. So the chassis and suspension can use the IMCA tech. And the motor and trans can have their own set of rules. I'm curious as to what everyone else thinks.

Y is that? Do you think there's no market for it or that it would be too hard to find a place for it. We're not trying to make up some kind of fad class. Its an entry level class that looks like an actual race car. I appreciate your opinions but if you could elaborate on them to provide a valid point of discussion.

To the average fan in the stands, they will look like slow modifieds.
Sorry.

I do not think it will have very much interest if any at all. You are talking about a full blown fabricated race car chassis for an entry level division. Too much money if you ask me. You can buy a turn key mini stock cheaper than a full mod roller. I don't see people spending that kind of $$ to race something like that. It would turn into a who has the most HP on a car like that. Guys would have the same $$ in it than a sport mod, IMO. On the plus side though, it would be cool to see a Mod get thru 5 laps before a yellow for once. Good luck with it if it goes.

The reason this class was even thought of is because they told the mini stocks that we were going to fast. So we didn't want to choke down these motors that we dumped a bunch of money in to.

Points for discussion.
1. There are already to many classes to chose from. To many classes means lower car counts per class.
2. How many more entry level classes are needed?
a. Mini stocks
b. American stocks
c. Hobby stocks
d. Sport mod's
3. A full sized Mod with a 4 banger in it? Now that's gonna' really get the crowd on their feet ....... NOT!!!

Another way to look at this is that it could be a stepping stone for the inexperienced sport-mod drivers. Not only would they be able to use the same cars, it could also alleviate the constant yellow flags in the sport-mod class. Making it an actual race instead of who can hold out the longest in that destruction derby of a main event. I believe that you need to go through the ranks in order to build the experience needed to compete. What better platform to start from.

If you are truly concerned about the amount of wrecks in the Sport Mod class, then bring in a couple of the more accomplished drivers and hold a couple seminars. One-on-one instruction will produce far better results. All another class of cars will do is produce another "small" class ........... and they will still be creating yellows.

If you truly believe that your going to get all the inexperienced drivers to go to a seminar, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona that I would like to sell you. First of all tell me who is going to admit to being a bad enough driver to qualify for this seminar. The reason for all of the cautions is always someone else's fault, and they just get caught up in them. How would you react to someone telling you that you can't drive and you need to go and listen to a guy that whoops your ass on the track consistently? Not only will people not sign up for your seminar, they will laugh at the fact that you told them too.

I know "experienced" drivers that have attended seminars just to pick up any tidbits of info they could and to hone their skills. And I don't know any rookie driver that wouldn't jump at a chance to learn whatever they could from a more experienced driver.
No thanks on the Arizona property, and unlike you, I will refrain from any condescending remarks.

Another class of anything is a horrible idea in California !! The absolute last thing we need is another look alike division with 8 cars!! But by all means knock yourself out!

Thank you for your opinions, I would like to see what you guys think about the setup and regulations for this new class. I understand that some of you feel like we don't need another class, but this is going to happen. So I'm going to try to make this the best for however long it lasts, and would like some advise as the best way to regulate and manage these new cars. Thank you.

i agree there are already too many classes. but also that all the previously mentioined entry level classes, are completely out of control. ministocks are no exception. which brings me to my suggestion for your new 4cyl mod class....
pick one, readily available, and easy to tech engine. do some research and find one thats cheap to build and reliable. put compression and cam limits on it, put a 350 holley on it, and the class might survive a while.

sounds like obama care and the rules indicate it should get expensive really fast. g-60, 2300 lbs, and less than 200 hp. that should fix something. jmo

I have a question, with the serious lack of power will these things even be drivable?
I ask this purely as an outsider, it is still a sport mod with sport mod suspension. I couldn't see my SS with my wifes Volvo motor in it talk about a WIKKID push LMAO.

Our mini stock cars and trucks were at the same weight. On top of the fact that we could only run a DOT tire. I honestly believe that these cars will be a much better class than the mini stocks.

The drivers at first will be former mini stock drivers. The buzz around this area is increasing everyday. And for Dave, the motors we have to run will be stock OEM cast blocks, no midget motors in these cars.
