NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION #1 SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY

PERRIS, CA (March 25) - Let the mayhem begin!  This Saturday night, March 29th, Perris Auto Speedway will host Night of Destruction #1 featuring crazy Figure 8 Racing, a Figure 8 Trailer Race, Democross and Spectator Races.  Spectator gates will open at 5:000 pm for the night of motorized madness and the first race will take place at 7:00.

Saturday’s event will be the first of four scheduled Nights of Destruction in the 2014 season at the famous Riverside County racing facility.  The other dates are April 26th, June 7th and September 6th.  Since the track first hosted them four years ago, the Nights of Destruction have become fan favorites and the biggest drawing regular events in the first 18-years of the tracks existence.  These days, they even outdraw the track’s regular sprint car shows.

“When we hosted the first Night of Destruction, we had a nice crowd in the stands, but we only had about 10 or 12 cars total show up to compete,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said with a laugh.  “I thought we were in real trouble with those few cars to run all three events.  To my surprise the crowd loved it and it has done nothing, but grow since that first event.  The crowds keep getting bigger and so does the field of competitors.  I am expecting record numbers on Saturday night in the stands and on the track.”

Two separate track layouts will be used for Saturday night’s automotive chaos.  The Figure 8 races and the Figure 8 Trailer race will be run on a temporary track set up in what is normally the middle of the infield pit area for all sprint car and PASSCAR Stock Car races.  The Democross and Spectator races will be run on the track’s inner quarter-mile.

Figure 8 racing goes back to the days of Ascot Park and the Corona Raceway and is run in the same fashion with daredevil drivers trying to pinpoint their timing perfectly to avoid a disaster at the intersection where cars going in opposite directions frequently come together in spectacular fashion.  The Figure 8 Trailer race is much like the regular Figure 8 race except that all cars must be pulling a trailer and the trailer must be attached for them to finish the race.

“All we require for the trailer race is for the drivers to show up with a trailer attached to the back of their cars,” Kazarian said laughing.  “Most of these drivers add something to the trailer.  Some of them pull boats on their trailers, we have had a catamaran, out house, Jacuzzi, jet skis, a rocking horse, several couches and more.  I have no idea where they come up with that stuff and I am afraid to ask, but the fans absolutely love it.”

Democross is an oval track race with virtually no rules.  Obstacles like boats, tractor tires and jet skis are placed on the track to add to the difficulty of securing a win.  If you want to take out the car next to you or the leader as he laps you, no problem.  It is legal.  It usually has the crowd up on its feet and hollering for all of the 20-lap main event.

Spectator racing matches two drivers in their street cars on the track at a time.  One starts in the middle of the back straight and one starts on the middle of the front straight (so they do not have to worry about crashing into each) and the first one to complete two laps wins.  The winner of each two-lap race moves on in the competition until there are only two cars left for the final.  It is a winner take all final with the victor taking home a beautiful trophy and large chunk of money.  However, the winner is not done yet.  He or she then takes on one of the tracks resident street stock drivers.  It is a four lap race and the street stock driver is in their race car.  If the Spectator Race winner beats the regular racer - don’t laugh it happened one time last year - they pick up an $400.00 on top of their earlier winnings.
