RYAN MCDANIEL TOPS IN IMCA MODIFIED STOCK CARS; KIRKPATRICK OVER RANDY SHAFER IN LATE MODELS; BRAD MYERS RETURNS AND WINSOval Motorsports
ANTIOCH, Calif. (June 14) – Visiting drivers Ryan McDaniel and A.J. Kirkpatrick took the checkered flag in two of the six features at Antioch Speedway. The largest field of drivers this season saw competition at the 3/8 mile clay oval on Saturday night.
McDaniel, of Chico, ended hometown ace Michael Salazar’s hope of a repeat victory in the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) modified stock car main event.
“I knew he would be the guy to beat tonight,” Salazar said after the feature. “Ryan is one of the top drivers in the division, and he runs well here every time he visits.”
Salazar saw McDaniel blast by him early in the event. Restarts afforded opportunity for Salazar to challenge the leader, but McDaniel soon walked away.
With just two laps to go, Randy Brown of Chowchilla snatched second place after a duel with Salazar.
“The track had bottom, middle and top grooves tonight – it was great,” McDaniel said after his runaway victory. “Once I discovered I could run up top, I was able to get more straightaway speed and break away from the pack.”
Brown, who was gaining speed as the race wore on, emerged as a contender.
“I was getting used to a new car – it was only my second night out in it,” he explained. “And, I haven’t raced here in a while.”
Antioch drivers Carl Berendsen and Dan Gonderman brought home fourth and fifth place.
KIRKPATRICK SKIRMISHES WITH SHAFER AND PAPENHAUSENThe fastest cars in the Northern All Star Late Model Stock Car feature event came together five laps into the race. Early leader Randy Shafer of Vacaville wound up in the wall, as Kirkpatrick, of Salinas and Richard Papenhausen from Chico, fought with him for the same piece of real estate.

After the crash, Shafer had to start from the rear of the largest field of late model stock cars this season. Kirkpatrick gained the lead, with Papenhausen inches away lap after lap.
Shafer, who may have had the fastest car of the night, came all the way back to third, and was challenging the two top cars at the fall of the checkered.
“It was a hard hit (when he and Kirkpatrick came together),” Shafer said after the race. “The car was bent up and I had all I could do to drive it back to third.”
Papenhusen, who was a close second to Kirkpatrick at the finish, also pointed to damage on his car.
“The front end of my car was all (messed) up,” he said. “It was tough to steer. I tried hard to pass him (Kirkpatrick) but I just couldn’t.”
Matt Micheli of Live Oak, and Paul Guglielmoni of Vacaville rounded out the top five.
RYLAND IMCA SPORTMOD WINNER“Fast Freddie” Ryland of Brentwood was unstoppable as he raced to win in the IMCA SportMod feature event. Watsonville’s Adrianne DeSousa worked her way to the top, challenging Ryland late in the race.
“Single file restarts late in the race helped me,” Ryland said. “The new car was better this week. We made some adjustments.”
DeSousa, who had never raced a SportMod at Antioch Speedway before, was impressive in her run on Ryland.
“The track is super slick. I wasn’t used to it,” she explained in victory lane. “I actually had to slow myself down to get around it faster.”
Jeremy Hoff of Copperopolis repaired damages from a heat race crash to come back and finish third. Al Sotomayor of Watsonville was fourth, with Merced Speedway standout Rick Diaz finishing fifth in his initial Antioch Speedway appearance.
BRENTWOOD’S MYERS COULDN’T STAY AWAY FROM WINNINGBrad Myers shocked the Hobby Stock world when he and his wife Melissa said they were selling their cars last season. The Brentwood champions had dominated the division for the past thee seasons.
Now, midway through the new season, Brad Myers bought his old car back, and two days later was in victory lane again.
“My old car was sitting in a field, waiting to be raced,” he said. “It still had my old number on it.”
Myers had hoped to buy a SportMod, but when that did not happen, the old car suddenly became an option.
“My dad from Texas, provided the financing,” he continued. “He said ‘you don’t mess with Texas – go out and win’.”
Myers did just that. He got past early leader Patti Ryland of Brentwood on a restart and never looked back. Bob Brown of Antioch was second, followed by Oakley’s Nick Baldwin and Kimo Oreta of Vacaville.
THREE IN A ROW FOR MACEDOWhile Roy Fisher of Antioch chased him lap after lap, Concord’s Billy Macedo used his years of experience to drive through traffic in Northern All Star Wingless Sprint Car main event.
Macedo scored his third feature win in a row.
“It is all about setting up for the pass, and getting around a lapped car as quick as you can,” Macedo said in victory lane. “Handling lapped cars is part of racing.”
Fisher closed the gap between he and Macedo by the finish of the race. Third went to Kyle Bakkie, followed by Rick Panfilli of Antioch and Tyler Henriques of Oakley.
SURPRISE WINNERBrent Curran of Antioch was declared winner of the “Four Banger” main event after the top two cars were disqualified for having the wrong size tires.
Antioch Speedway’s “Summer Spectacular” offers sprint and modified stock car drivers extra incentive this Saturday night (June 21). The sprint car event pays $3,000 to win, and the modified event will pay $2,000 to win with a 24 car minimum.
Only these two divisions will be on the schedule, but the car count expected should necessitate a “B” Main event for each.
Antioch Speedway is located within the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, 1201 W. 10th St. in Antioch, Calif. Admission is $14 for adults, $10 for children 6-12, and $8 for senior citizens. Children under six years old are admitted free. A family four pack of tickets is $40. Secured parking is offered by the Fairgrounds for $5. Racing begins at 6:30 p.m.
