BOBBY HOGGE IV TAKES IMCA NORCAL CHALLENGE; CHRIS MAGOON UNTOUCHABLE IN WINGLESS SPRINT CARS
ANTIOCH, Calif. - Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas fought his way to the top, picking off the highly competitive field of drivers one by one in the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) NORCAL Challenge Saturay night at Antioch Speedway.
“I had some problems in the middle of the race,” Hogge IV said in victory lane. “I almost spun out once.”
Coming from 12th starting position in the 16 car field, Hogge IV watched as a battle waged for the lead between Kellen Chadwick of Oakley and Ryan McDaniel of Chico. One row behind, it was arch-rivals Nick DeCarlo and Troy Foulger, racing so evenly both cars appeared as one.
“Nick and I were side by side for 18 laps,” said Foulger. “It was great to be able to race like that.”
With three laps to go, Hogge IV m
ade a daring move coming out of the second turn passing a cluster of cars on the inside to work his way to the top.
“I just went straight off the bottom,” he said. “I kept the left front nearly on the infield. The track had three grooves. It was excellent.”
Hogge IV caught Chadwick after two tries on caution flag restarts.
“I knew I had to have a good start to get Kellen in the first and second turn,” Hogge IV explained. With the track being dry-slick, I needed good momentum to roll through the turns.”
Foulger also discovered there were three grooves, using the discovery to shake off DeCarlo.
“I went all the way to the top of the track,” Foulger said. “It was the only way to get around Nick (DeCarlo).”
Foulger challenged Hogge right to the finish. McDaniel took up the battle with DeCarlo and edged him to finished third. DeCarlo held off fifth place finisher Kellen Chadwick.
Magoon Takes Northern All Star Wingless Sprint Car Feature
Chris Magoon of Oakley, who won his first winged 360 sprint car feature a month ago, showed his driving diversity by bringing home the checkered flag in the Northern All Stars Wingless Sprint Car main event. The event featured the debut of NFL football legend Jeremy Newberry of Brentwood as a sprint car driver. The host of two television football shows finished fifth out of 14 drivers competing, driving a car owned by Knightsen’s Tom Sizemore.
Magoon, who ran away with the feature, offered Newberry tips prior to the race, providing his car with shocks and a torsion. Second place Roy Fisher of Antioch was parked on the other side of Newberry, also helped the new driver.
“He did great,” said Magoon. “The track was dry and it made for some fun racing. I couldn’t see Jeremy behind me, but to finish fifth on the first night out is an accomplishment.”
Billy Macedo of Concord, who has won three features this season, was third, followed by Kyle Bakkie of Sacramento.
“I ran out of track,” said Macedo. I ran the bottom out, tried the top, and couldn’t get past them.”
Learn Takes Third Win of the Season
Petaluma’s Mike Learn schooled the field as he took his second feature in a row in the Limited Late Model stock car division. It was his third win of the season.
“I got through the first skirmish of the night without too much damage,” Learn said of the pileup that occurred on the second lap. “My car is working well on this track.”
Second place Mike Hynes of Suisun edged Mike Gustafson of Concord for second. He was impressed with Larry Damitz’s driving to the finish with a broken left front suspension on his car.
“It was a tough race,” said Hynes. “A few great cars were damaged in the pileup, but raced on. Mike (Gustafson) gave me some room and I took advantage of it.” Kimo Oreta Gains Points
Vacaville’s Kimo Oreta wanted to be back in victory lane after Brentwood’s Brad Myers won the last Hobby Stock feature event.
“I told myself to relax, be patient, and get a good finish,” Oreta said in victory lane.
Oreta didn’t do exactly that. He jumped into an early lead, with rival Patti Ryland of Brentwood battling him. Then Myers passed Ryland and chased down Oreta.
“Kimo was long gone,” said Myers. “I broke out of traffic too late. The track was slick, and I had to learn a little every lap before I could catch him. Time ran out.” Dutra Scores in Dwarf Cars
Travis Dutra of Pleasant Hill was untouchable in the Dwearf Car main event. He was far ahead of second place Mike Corsaro of Tracy, even though he did not know that.
“I thought he was right behind me,” Dutra said of Corsaro. “Once I’m in front, I don’t look back. I just make the fastest lap times I could.”
