WATSONVILLE, CA (August 2) - In the IMCA Modifieds, Salinas’ Cody Burke held off Prunedale’s Jim Pettit II to win the 30-lap Mike Cecil Classic. The night started off with three heat races to accommodate the 22 cars that showed up. In heat one, Hollister’s Andy Obertello took the lead from Watsonville’s Todd Hermosillo on lap five to take the win. Jim Pettit II, Hermosillo, Santa Maria’s Josh Vogt, and Salinas’ Austin Burke rounded out the top five. In heat two, Salinas’ Alex Wilson finished ahead of his brother, Kyle, to capture the win. Watsonville’s Kenny Nott, Atwater’s Ryan Porter, and Manteca’s Mitch Enos completed the top five. In heat three, Cody Burke passed Gilroy’s Stephen Hopf on lap three to claim the victory. Hopf, Turlock’s Harley Turner, Santa Cruz’s Joe Antonetti, and Gilroy’s John DiGiovanni capped the top five. In the 30 lap main event, Andy Obertello leapt out to an early lead, only to be slowed by a yellow flag for Atwater’s Bill Egleston. On the restart, Obertello’s night came to an end with a mechanical issue. This handed Cody Burke the lead until the field was slowed by a crash involving Kyle Wilson, Joe Antonetti, and Stevinson’s Robert Dias. On the restart, Cody Burke battled with Stephen Hopf and Jim Pettit II until the yellow flag was back out on lap 25. Kyle Wilson looped it around in turns three and four to setup a five lap dash to the checkered flag. On the final restart, Cody Burke managed to just hold off Jim Pettit II to take the Mike Cecil Classic. Stephen Hopf was third, Ryan Porter came home fourth, and Kenny Nott took fifth. Kenny Nott will have a 25 point lead over Kyle Wilson when the IMCA Modifieds return to the track this Friday.
In the IMCA Sport Mods, Bakersfield’s Nick Spainhoward continued his dominance Saturday to take another feature win. In heat one, Watsonville’s Adriane Frost held off Spainhoward, Los Banos’ Shawn Bryant, Watsonville’s TJ Etchison, and Morgan Hill’s Al Sotomayor to take a popular heat race victory. In heat two, Bakersfied’s Ethan Dotson took the lead from Chowchilla’s Rick Diaz with two laps to go to take the victory. Diaz, San Jose’s Robert Gallaher, Morgan Hill’s Anthony Giuliani, and Pleasanton’s Paul Mulder rounded out the top five. In the 20 lap main event, Robert Gallaher led the first two laps until the yellow flag came out for Shawn Bryant and Salinas’ Alex Bieser. One lap after the restart, Al Sotomayor and Paul Mulder tangled in turn one to bring out another yellow. On lap four, TJ Etchison took the lead before he pulled off with car troubles on lap five, relinquishing the lead to Nick Spainhoward. The race saw another yellow flag come out when Robert Gallaher came to a stop in turn two on lap eight. One lap later, Jack Hurley, Anthony Giuliani, and Alex Bieser all spun or came to a stop in turn four, but all continued the race. The last caution came out on lap twelve for Anthony Giuliani, who spun in turn one. On the final restart, Nick Spainhoward drove away from the rest of the field to take the win. Adriane Frost, Robert Gallaher, Anthony Guiliani, and Jack Hurley rounded out the top five. Nick Spainhoward and Adriane Frost are now tied for second position in the track championship behind Rick Diaz. The IMCA Sport Mods will be back in action this Friday.
In the American Stock division, Salinas’ Billy Nelson took a controversial win after two, one-lap shootouts decided the victor. In the first of two heat races, Watsonville’s Tim Clark Sr. led from the drop of the green flag to claim the win. Castroville’s Scott Fuhrman, Corralitos’ Ron Bonnema, Santa Cruz’s Robert Huckaby Sr., and San Jose’s John Farrell rounded out the top five. In the second heat race, Prunedale’s Matt Hagio passed Gilroy’s Michael Kofnovec Jr. on the third lap to capture the victory. Billy Nelson, Kofnovec Jr., Watsonville’s Tony Oliveira, and Corralitos’ Sean Capdepon completed the top five. In the twenty lap main event, Sean Capdepon led the field around one time before Ron Bonnema took the lead on the second lap. The yellows started to fly on lap four when Santa Cruz’s Robert Huckaby Jr. spun in turn four. On lap seven, Scott Fuhrman came to a halt in turn four to bring out the second yellow flag of the race. On lap 15, San Jose’s Katie Briggs spun in turn four to bring out another yellow flag. On the restart, Ron Bonnema held on to the lead in front of Billy Nelson and Tim Clark Sr., only to have his lead disappear once again with a caution on the final lap. John Farrell stopped in turn one on lap 19 to set up a one lap dash to the finish. On the restart, Ron Bonnema slid up the track in turns one and two, allowing Billy Nelson and Tim Clark Sr. to pass to the inside. Nelson and Clark Sr. were side by side for half a lap until another untimely yellow flag came out for Chris McCabe, who looped it around in turn four. On the final restart, Billy Nelson held off Tim Clark Sr. to capture the main event. Santa Cruz’s Terry Campion wound up third, Matt Hagio came in fourth, and Robert Huckaby Sr finished fifth. The points were shaken up with the start of the “Chase.” Billy Nelson will hold a six point advantage over Matt Hagio when the American Stocks return to action this Friday.
In the 4-Bangers, San Jose’s Dan Downey arrived in victory lane for the fourth time in 2014. With the start of the, “Chase,” Downey also leads the points standings. In the single heat race, Robert Huckaby Jr. took the lead from Watsonville’s Luke Babcock on the second lap to score the win. Babcock managed to hold onto second ahead of Watsonville’s James Alaga, San Martin’s Justin McPherson, and Watsonville’s Jake Roberson. In the twenty lap main event, Dan Downey dominated and had almost a full straight away lead. This held true until lapped traffic entered the picture. Downey was slowed down on numerous occasions by lapped cars, allowing Luke Babcock and Justin McPherson to close in. However, Babcock and McPherson ran out of time and had to settle for second and third behind Dan Downey. Robert Huckby Jr and Watsonville’s Samantha Roberson rounded out the top five. Dan Downey will have a seven point lead over Justin McPherson when the 4-Bangers come back on August 15th.
