Jim Pettit II captures another IMCA Modified win Anthony Giuliani triumphs in IMCA Sport Mods, and Dan McCabe returns to 4-Banger victory lane
Ocean PR WATSONVILLE, CA (September 6) - Prunedale’s Jim Pettit II won for the fourth time in 2014 after numerous others suffered mechanical problems or were caught up in accidents. In heat one, Watsonville’s Todd Hermosillo beat Salinas’ Cody Burke, Aptos’ Nick Silva, San Jose’s Eric Van Hooser, and Stevinson’s Robert Dias to take the win. In heat two, Hollister’s Anthony Copeland captured the victory with Jim Pettit II, Salinas’ Kyle Wilson, Livermore’s Brian Cass, and San Jose’s John Pierce completing the top five. In the third and final heat race, Watsonville’s Kenny Nott claimed the win by beating Salinas’ Robert Marsh, Aromas’ Raymond Keldson, Salinas’ Austin Burke, and Gilroy’s Stephen Hopf. In the 25 lap feature, Todd Hermosillo jumped out to an early lead with Anthony Copeland trailing in second. On lap six, the two leaders tangled in turns one and two which handed the lead to Nick Silva. One lap after the restart, Jim Pettit II took the lead from Silva, who would bring out a caution three laps later. Nick Silva looped it around in turns three and four to slow the field for the second time in the race. On the restart, Robert Marsh and Jim Pettit II battled closely for the lead until John Pierce stopped in turn two on lap 13. One lap after the restart, Robert Marsh took the lead from Pettit only to have it taken away when Anthony Copeland brought out a caution on lap 15. After the restart, Cody Burke passed Robert Marsh for second and closed in on Jim Pettit for the lead. The two raced cleanly for several laps before Cody Burke’s night came to a bizarre end. On lap 19, Burke hooked a rut and flipped in turn one. This put Robert Marsh back in second briefly until a mechanical issue ended his night several laps later. On the final restart, Pettit held off Kenny Nott to take the win. Kyle Wilson had another successful run finishing third with Austin Burke and Atwater’s Bill Egleston rounding out the top five. Kenny Nott holds and 27 point lead over Kyle Wilson in the championship standings. The IMCA Modifieds return to action September 19th.
Morgan Hill’s Anthony Giuliani won his first IMCA Sport Mod victory of his career Friday night after maneuvering around Morgan Hill’s Al Sotomayor late in the race. In the lone heat race, Anthony Giuliani grabbed the victory ahead of Chowchilla’s Rick Diaz, San Jose’s Robert Gallaher, Al Sotomayor, and Watsonville’s Adriane Frost who rounded out the top five. Bakersfield’s Nick Spainhoward had an uncharacteristic heat race performance finishing sixth with San Jose’s Charlie Hunter coming in seventh. The twenty lap main event started off with a crash in turn four on the opening lap involving Nick Spainhoward, Rick Diaz, Robert Gallaher, and Anthony Giuliani who all suffered various amounts of damage. Diaz was the only one who did not continue on. On the complete restart, Al Sotomayor leapt out front fending off Anthony Giuliani. Nick Spainhoward’s night ended early when he pulled off track on lap nine while running third. This left just five cars on track. Al Sotomayor continued to lead and looked to be on his way to his first IMCA Sport Mod victory until a small but costly mistake let Anthony Giuliani by. Anthony Giuliani led the rest of the way to take his first career IMCA Sport Mod victory ahead of Sotomayor, Robert Gallaher, Adriane Frost, and Charlie Hunter. Rick Diaz leads the point standings over Nick Spainhoward and Adriane Frost. The IMCA Sport Mods will be back September 19th.
In the 4-Bangers, Tracy’s Dan McCabe won for the first time in 2014 after holding off points leader Dan Downey of San Jose. In the first heat race, Dan Downey beat Watsonville’s Samantha Roberson, Dan McCabe, Watsonville’s Jams Alaga, and San Martin’s Justin McPherson to take the victory. In the second heat race, Watsonville’s Luke Babcock took the win ahead of Watsonville’s Jake Roberson, Felton’s Katie Beardsley, Felton’s Chris Amos, and Aromas’ DJ Keldson. In the twenty lap feature, James Alaga led the first six laps before giving it up to Dan McCabe. McCabe led the rest of the way beating Dan Downey, Jake Roberson, Justin McPherson, and Samantha Roberson. The race ran not-stop but fell short of the twenty lap record. This was Dan McCabe’s first victory in the division since 2012 after running in the IMCA Sport Mod category in 2013. Dan Downey has an eleven point lead over Justin McPherson in the point standings going into September 19th’s race.
