Hogge IV Beats Chadwick, Foulger, DeForest in All Stars Event
Oval Motorsports ANTIOCH, CA (September 20) - Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas stopped Shawn DeForest’s streak at two as he brought home a victory in the 20-car Northern All Stars Modified feature event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. Hogge first dueled with DeForest, then tackled Troy Foulger, and finally caught Kellen Chadwick to take the win. “The track came to me tonight,” Hogge IV said in victory lane. “I made passes on the top, on the bottom, and used the middle to pass Kellen (Chadwick).” Livermore’s DeForest, who won the last two battles with Hogge IV, finished fourth in fast company. “I missed the set up a bit tonight, and got shuffled out of the lead,” he said. “I should have run straight down the middle of the track. I figured that out on the white flag lap. It was too late.” Oakley’s Chadwick, who will be at this Saturday’s Delta-Valley Classic, ran his strongest race at Antioch this year. Foulger challenged him to the finish. Kevin Fitzgerald of Brentwood was fifth in his first visit to the speedway this season. Hogge IV is excited about next weekend’s Delta-Valley Classic, which will take place at Antioch Speedway on Saturday, and Merced Speedway on Sunday. “With the way the car performed tonight, all I have to do is wash it,” he joked. “Actually, I’ll be digging deeper than I did all season, making sure everything is right with the car, and that I have the correct set-up I think is necessary for track conditions.” RYLAND TAKES FOUTH IMCA SPORTMOD FEATURE
Fred Ryland’s first season in the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) SportMod division has been stellar. The Brentwood driver battled Keith Brown, Jr. of Pittsburg for six laps before Brown’s car faltered. “I’d like to have run with him to the finish,” second place Brown said in victory lane. “But I was running on seven cylinders – a spark plug wire fell off just before the end of the race.” Ryland was happy to win one more feature. “That’s one more than my wife, we’re having our own competition,” he said. Patti Ryland has three wins in the Hobby Stock divisions. Ryland thought Brown had him beaten a couple of times in the feature. “On the restarts, it was anyone’s guess who would take the lead,” he added. Jeremy Hoff of Copperopolis came back with a new car after destroying his SportMod a week earlier. He finished third, with Al Johnson and Paul Mulder of Antioch completing the top five.
ORETA IN HOBBY STOCKS, CORRIEA TAKES DWARF CARS, SWANK FOUR-BANGERS
Kimo Oreta of Vacaville fought off the challenges of Brentwood rival Brad Meyers to win the Hobby Stock main event. Michael Cooper Bay Point was third, with Antioch’s Christopher Brown finishing one spot ahead of his dad in the top five. Charlie Correia of Tracy scored his second win of the year in the Dwarf Car division. Correia, who began racing in the division in 1990, battled Thomas Leiby of Copperopolis, a boat racer who discovered Dwarf cars this season. Danny Wagner of Bay Point was third. Rookie Jordan Swank of Concord won his first race in the four cylinder “Four-Banger” division, ending Brent Curran’s seven-race streak. Curran finished fourth. “It just feels so great to win,” was all Swank could say in victory lane. “My crew, my family, worked so hard all year.” Sixteen-year-old rookie Kelby Fuss, returning from a bad wreck in the division a month ago, finished second. She battled fellow high school student Tayler Swank, sister of winner Jordan Swank. Jessica Jones Castro Valley was fifth.
