'The Dominator' Brad Pounds takes Night #1 of the Pat Pettit Shootout

WATSONVILLE, CA (October 3) - Bakersfield’s Brad Pounds eventually took the thirty lap feature after numerous other contenders fell out of the running. The night started off with six, eight lap heat races for the 55 cars in the pits. With that many heat races, only the top two finishers in the heats directly advanced to the A-Main.

In the first heat race, San Jose’s Eric Van Hooser passed Phoenix, Oregon’s Jeremy Richey on the second lap to take the opening win. Prunedale’s Jim Pettit II, Jeremy Richey, Martinez’s Troy Foulger, and Santa Rosa’s Tim Balding rounded out the top five.

In heat two, Medford, Oregon’s Albert Gill led every lap to advance onto the A-Main. Also transferring was Morgan Hill's Jim DiGiovanni. Medford, Oregon’s Tom Berry, Vacaville’s Danny Dozier, and Atwater's Ryan Porter completed the top five.

In the third heat race, Salinas’ Austin Burke passed Winton’s Steve Stone on the third lap to win the eight lap affair. Olivehurst’s Randy McDaniel recovered nicely from a first lap spin to take the final transfer position. Rounding out the top five were Dayton, Nevada’s Walter Ball, Watsonville’s Todd Hermosillo, and Gilroy’s Stephen Hopf.

In the fourth heat race, Salinas’ JR Harper was credited with leading the first lap before a crash involving Aptos’ Nick Silva slowed the field. Silva hit the turn four wall before he could complete one lap. On the restart, Oakley’s Kellen Chadwick moved into the lead and led the rest of the race to lock himself into the A-Main. Coming in second and also advancing was Watsonville’s Kenny Nott, with Gardnerville, Nevada’s Robert Miller, JR Harper, and Hollister’s Anthony Copeland rounding out the top five.

In the fifth heat race, Bakersfield’s Troy Morris Jr. led the first three laps before a caution flew for an accident involving Los Banos’ Jim Blackwell, Bakersfield’s Chett Reeves, and Salinas’ Kyle Wilson. One lap after the restart, Salinas’ Bobby Hogge IV charged around Troy Morris Jr. to take the lead. Hogge went on to take the win with Troy Morris Jr., Salinas’ Alex Wilson, Kyle Wilson, and Watsonville’s Tim Clark Sr. rounded out the top five.

In the sixth and final heat race, Brad Pounds drove to victory with Morgan Hill’s Jeff Decker finishing in the other transfer position. Antioch’s Jake Dewsbury, Chico’s Mark Abouzeid, and Brentwood’s Kevin Fitzgerald completed the top five.

In the first of two B-Mains, Jeremy Richey led the first lap before the caution came out for San Jose’s Donny Casho and Los Banos’ Harley Turner, who collided in turn three. On the restart, Alex Wilson took the lead while more carnage unfolded behind him. Gilroy’s Jerry Movrich, Chett Reeves, and Salinas’ Cody Burke collided to bring out another yellow flag. Before another lap could be completed after the restart, Stephen Hopf rolled over on his roof on the back straight after Winton's Paul Stone and Tim Balding came together. Stephen Hopf emerged from the car unhurt, but the same couldn't be said for his car. Two more yellow flags would come out for Steve Stone on lap three and Capitola’s Kyle Bryan on lap four, who both spun in turns three and four. The rest of the twenty lap race saw no more stoppages with Alex Wilson, Livermore’s Brian Cass, Troy Foulger, Kyle Wilson, and Cody Burke transferring to the A-Main.

In the second B-Main, Tom Berry led the first lap before a wreck collecting Jake Dewsbury, JR Harper, Martinez’s Nick DeCarlo, Aromas’ Raymond Keldson, and Olivehurst’s Ryan McDaniel slowed the field. On lap five, Santa Cruz’s Mike Vukelich and Antioch’s John Pierce spun to bring out the caution flag. On the restart, Tom Berry led Mark Abouzeid back to the green. Coming out of turn four, Tom Berry spun in front of the field and collected Ryan Porter, Gilroy’s Brandon Leonard, and Morgan Hill’s John DiGiovanni. This handed Mark Abouzeid the lead. On lap 14, Danny Dozier stopped in turn four. On the restart, Robert Miller passed Mark Abouzeid for the lead. The final caution flag flew for Jake Dewsbury, Antioch’s Chester Kniss, and Mike Vukelich, who came together in turn three. While under yellow, the race hit the time limit and the yellow-checkered was displayed. Robert Miller originally won the race, but failed post-race tech inspection. This meant Mark Abouzeid, Kevin Fitzgerald, Michael Salazar, Salinas’ Robert Marsh, and Jake Dewsbury advanced to the A-Main. Taking the past champions provisional was Ryan McDaniel, who tagged the rear of the field.

In the A-Main, Albert Gill led the first four laps before Kellen Chadwick passed him for the lead. The first yellow came out for Troy Foulger, who stopped in turn four on lap nine. During the caution period, Bobby Hogge IV pulled off track with a flat tire while running fourth. Before another lap could be completed after the restart, Randy McDaniel stopped in turn two to bring out another yellow flag. Two laps later, Jake Dewsbury also stopped in turn two to cause a caution period. Under this caution period, Kellen Chadwick pulled off track with a water leak that unfortunately ended his night early. This gave Brad Pounds the lead of the main event. Pounds inched away from the rest of the field until the yellow came back out, this time for Robert Marsh, who stopped in turn two on lap 14. One lap after the restart, Bobby Hogge IV’s night came to an official end when the drive line broke, causing Hogge to stop in turn two. On the restart, Brad Pounds drove away from all other challengers to take the opening night feature win. Alex Wilson, Kenny Nott, Jeff Decker, and Austin Burke rounded out the top five, with Albert Gill, Brian Cass, Jim Pettit II, Cody Burke, and Kyle Wilson completing the top ten.
