Arriaga Pads Antioch Speedway Point Lead With Impressive Victory
08/08/15 at 10:25pm

Shawn Arriaga finally scored his first 25 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event win of the season Saturday night at Antioch Speedway.  Arriaga came into the night as the point leader, and this will add to that advantage with just one event for this division remaining on the schedule.  The race ran without a yellow flag, and Arriaga built a commanding half-lap lead by the time the checkered flag waved.

Jeremy Burt was an early second as Jake Haulot started back in the fifth row.  Burt was in heavy traffic by lap 15, and Haulot used that to close in on him.  Haulot finally made the move past Burt for second on lap 21, but Arriaga had a big lead by then.  Arriaga scored a satisfying victory ahead of Haulot, Burt, Chris Magoon and Art McCartjy.

Richard Papenhausen won his seventh 20 lap DIRTcar Late Model Main Event.  Papenhausen battled fiercely with Jeff Decker until making a low pass in Turn 4 of the ninth lap to take the lead.  Decker had led the first eight laps from his front row starting spot.  Once he gained the lead, Papenhausen would lead Decker through a couple of caution periods for the well earned victory.  Paul Guglielmoni finished third.

Anthony Giuliani collected his second IMCA Sport Modified Main Event victory.  Giuliani made his winning pass with an inside move in the fourth turn on the 16th lap.  Al Johnson led early on until spinning in Turn 2 of the tenth lap and collecting Giuliani and Fred Ryland.  That put Patti Ryland in the lead, and she held the spot until Giuliani made his winning pass on lap 16.  A lap later, P. Ryland spun in Turn 4, and Giuliani won ahead of Jeremy Hoff.  Megan Ponciano made a last turn pass on Jimmy Ford to finish third.

Merced and Chowchilla point leader Kevin Joaquin impressed in his first visit to Antioch by winning the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event.  Motor problems kept Joaquin from starting his heat race, and he started in the fifth row of the feature.  Front row starter Danny Jones led the first ten laps as Joaquin worked his way to the front.  Joaquin made his winning pass on the inside in Turn 3 on lap 11.  Kimo Oretta took over second on lap 17 and pressured Joaquin hard the rest of the way.  However, Joaquin held on for an impressive victory ahead of Oreta and Jones.

Larry Damitz went flag to flag for another 20 lap Limited Late Model Main Event victory.  The current point leader Damitz had a front row start, and even two yellow flags couldn’t keep him from scoring the victory.  Damitz was followed closely at the checkered flag by Mike Hynes and Mike Gustafson.  The second place finish was a season best effort for Hynes.

Racing resumes next Saturday night at Antioch Speedway with a five division show that will include IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Wingless Spec Sprints, Limited Late Models and Hobby Stocks.
