Four Cylinder Frenzy On Tap Saturday Night At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...Fresh off the track's best season opening event in recent seasons, Southern Oregon Speedway returns with an exciting lineup that is being billed as Four Cylinder Frenzy. The full powered V8 Late Model class will headline this show that features for Four Cylinder classes. The Valley Stor-All Late Model Lites make their season debut with Mini Stocks, JOAT Labs Hornets, Pro 4 West Modifieds and the Silva Painting Destruction Derby also on the night's agenda.

After winning a good battle for the Late Model championship last season, Nathan Augustine is back to see if he can defend the crown. Augustine was a model of consistency last season in winning two Main Events and leading the division with four Trophy Dash victories. However, he can expect some stiff competition from Bob Dees. Dees is a longtime Southern Oregon Speedway competitor who ran Pro Stocks for several years and was a feature winner there as well. He is also the 2016 champion and was a two time feature winner last season.

Garrett Dees was last season's top rookie in the class, and after an impressive performance in the finale, he is hungry to notch his first victory in this division. Past Late Model champion Dave Foote, Don Garrett Jr and longtime Medford area competitor Mike Linder are anticipated along with the division debut of 2014 Street Stock champion Miles Deubert.

Charlie Eaton has been a model of consistency in the Valley Stor-All Late Model Lites division during these past two seasons. Last year, he had his best year yet in second. Two things are on his radar this season. He's looking for a championship and he's looking to grab a feature victory. Two people who could stand in his way are reigning champion Bob Burkett and 2016 titlist Lee Doty. Burkett has racked up impressive numbers throughout a Mini Stock career that saw him win the 2016 championship and earn four runner-up rankings. Doty has won more Main Events than anybody in this class in the past two seasons. Other drivers to watch for include 2002 Super Truck champion Greg Arnold, Danny Prewitt, Eric Aos and his son Dusty Aos.

David Steele started the season as anticipated by winning the Mini Stock Main Event. With over 20 feature wins in his impressive Southern Oregon Speedway career, he's still searching for his first track championship here. He may very well be the driver to beat this season, but 2013 champion Steve Goetz could be the man standing in his way. Goetz was a close second to Steele last week. Not to be forgotten in the shuffle is reigning champion Kristopher Mix, who finished third last week. 2014 champion Gary Anderson will be hoping to rebound from horrendous luck in the opener, and other drivers to keep an eye on this week include Hunter Magnan, Garrett Fredrickson and rookie competitors Tim Hedges and Cameron Hall.

If last week was any indication, the JOAT Labs Hornets division figures to be a wide-open battle all season long. Second year competitor Brandon Wonsyld had an impressive night as he held off reigning champion Jason Stoutenburgh to win both the Main Event and his heat race. Brandon's teammate, Dylan Irving, took the checkered flag in third after a late race battle with rookie Zack Nelson. These four aren't the only drivers you need to watch in the race for victory. Anybody can win, and other drivers anticipated this week include 2016 champion Tim Hedges, wife Jenna Hedges and son Ashtin Hedges, Derrel Nelson Jr and Bree Tritchler.

In the Salem area of Oregon, the Pro 4 West Modifieds have been competing indoors during the winter. These four cylinder racers have competed at just about every track currently operating in the state. In fact, they had a visit to Southern Oregon Speedway in 1996 and came back last year for a race, won by Tobey Fernando. The record shows that the last three champions at Salem are from the Fernando family. Thomas Fernando won by 10 points this year over Tobey, Papa Tom Ferrando is the 2017 champion and Tobey won the title a year earlier. All three are anticipated this week along with Rick Wagner, Barry Lampert and Zac Fernando.

Not only did Chris Silva come on board to sponsor the Destruction Derby, the painter will be feilding two of the cars in this weekend's event. It's been a few years since the Destruction Derby has been featured at Southern Oregon Speedway, and there's excitement in the air.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the first race at 7 p.m. General Admission is $12, Veterans, Seniors and Juniors (6-12) are $6 and children 5 and under are free. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Wauge Opens Southern Oregon Speedway Season With IMCA Modified Victory

White City, Oregon...May 5...Taking the lead from Nick Trenchard, Mark Wauge went on to score the victory in the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. The 49th career Modified win for him at his home track paid Wauge $500. Trenchard settled for a second place finish behind the seven time Southern Oregon Speedway champion.

Dave Duste Jr made his first appearance in two seasons and led the first three laps ahead of James Welshonse. A yellow flag flew for David Satterfield at that point, and Duste continued to lead Welshonse. A low pass in Turn 2 of the fifth lap gained Welshonse the lead as Jeremy Ohlde followed him into second. Stan Gunderson spun in Turn 3 for a lap six caution flag. Welshonse continued to lead Ohlde and Duste on the restart, and Trenchard moved into third on lap eight. Welshonse's great run up front ended as he pitted off the back stretch on lap nine. Ohlde had the lead at that point ahead of Trenchard and Wauge. An inside move down the front stretch of the 12th circuit put Trenchard into the lead, and Wauge raced past Ohlde for second a lap later. Ohlde's great run up front ended as he pitted on lap 14, putting Duste back into third. The battle was on between Trenchard and Wauge, but Wauge made a Turn 3 move around Trenchard for the lead on lap 19. Once in front, Wauge brought it home to victory. Trenchard settled for second, and reigning champion Jesse Bailey made a late pass on Duste to finish third. Duane Orsburn was the final lead lap finisher in fifth as Gundersen, Bo Shields, Jantzen Knips, Albert Gill and Satterfield rounded out the Top 10 at the checkered flag.

They ran three six lap heat races with wins going to Gill, Trenchard and Welshonse. The IMCA Modifieds will be back for the Sixth Annual Roger Haudenshild Tribute race on June 2nd. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

This was the first career victory for Marble in this division. Marble won the 2015 Mini Stock championship at the speedway. 2017 runner up Willie McFall once again settled for a second place finish.

Marble led the restart ahead of McFall, and Tony Duste settled into third a lap later. Brian Knorr stalled in Turn 4 for a lap four caution flag. Marble led McFall and Duste on the restart. Marble maintained command on the restart and wasn't seriously threatened as he won ahead of McFall and Duste. Hibbard Opens Sprint Car Season With Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...May 5...Grabbing the lead early on, David Hibbard sped to an impressive victory in the 25 lap Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Hibbard set a rapid pace in posting the $1,000 victory in his Dave's Carpet And Vinyl Liquidators sponsored Sprinter. Fourteen year old phenom Tanner Holmes won a spirited duel with Enrique Jaime to collect the second place finish.

Bailey Hibbard used his win in the six laps Scramble to grab the pole position for the Main Event, but second place Scramble finisher Jaime charged into the lead ahead of Jeffrey Hudson and David Hibbard at the green flag. David Hibbard made a move around Hudson for second on lap four, and Jaime was lapping a slower car. Hibbard used the slower car to gain some momentum and made the low pass in Turn 2 for the lead on lap six. Once Hibbard got the lead in the non-stop event, he rapidly pulled away from the pack. Holmes moved past Hudson for third on lap eight and set his sights on Jaime. The battle was between Jaime and Holmes for several laps for that second spot, but Jaime was doing an exceptional job of protecting his position. However, Holmes found an opening in Turn 4 of the 20th lap and slipped underneath Jaime to gain second. David Hibbard was off to a huge lead that he took to the checkered flag. Holmes posted his best finish yet in second, followed by Jaime, Hudson and final lead lap finisher Blaine Cory. Marissa Henson took a checkered flag in sixth as Theron Smith, Calvin Hibbard, Bailey Hibbard and Steve Thompson rounded out the Top 10.

There were 12 competitors in the pits, but Todd Whipple and Camden Robustelli suffered mechanical issues that forced them to scratch from the feature. Jaime won his six lap heat race ahead of Cory, and Bailey Hibbard held off his father, David Hibbard, to win the other heat. The Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars, presented by Hays Oil, return for the Open Wheel Showcase Event on May 26th. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

White City, Oregon...May 5...David Steele opened the season by winning the 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was his 21st career win at the track. Steele had to contend with teammate and 2013 champion Steve Goetz for most of the race before taking the checkered flag in first.

Goetz and Steele shared the front row for the Main Event with Goetz taking the lead on the opening lap. Steele made a high move in Turn 4 of the second lap to take the lead from Goetz before a yellow flag flew for rookie Cameron Hall. Hornet competitor Tim Hedges joined the field late as Steele led Goetz and Hunter Magnan on the restart. The lead three cars ran in close formation, and 2014 champion Gary Andersen stalled on the front straightaway for a lap 7 caution flag. The first restart attempt was botched as Garrett Fredrickson spun in Turn 2, and Steele led Goetz on the next restart. Reigning champion Kristopher Mix slipped past Magnan for the third position. The rest of the race ran without a caution flag, and Steele brought it home to victory ahead of Goetz, Mix, Magnan and final lead lap finisher Frederickson.
