Sears Wins Gordon Russell Sr Memorial Race At Cedarville Speedway
Cedarville, CA...June 23...Jay Sears scored the victory in the Third Annual Gordon Russell Sr Memorial Race at Cedarville Speedway. The 20 lap Nevada Pro Stock Association Main Event is held in honor of Russell, who used to race at the old Cedarville Speedway. Sears collected a trophy about as big as he is as well as a $1,500 winner's paycheck. The race up front was close as past Quincy IMCA Modified champion Jeff Olschowka and current Oregon Outlaw Pro Stock Association point leader Scott Lenz were not far behind in second and third, respectively. Robbie Grace was a solid fourth as Last Chance Qualifier winner Bill Pearson won a close battle with James Flowers for the fifth position. Scott Rogers, John David Duffie, 2016 Oregon Outlaw Pro Stock champion Steve Borror and incoming Nevada Pro Stock point leader Travis White rounded out the Top 10, all on the lead lap.
A good field 26 competitors showed up to Cedarville for the third annual event. Gordon Russell Jr organized this race in the hopes of not only creating an annual event for the Pro Stocks at his old home track, but also as a means to get excitement going in Cedarville about possibly having more races there in the future. Russell Jr won the first of five 10 lap heat races ahead of Oregon Outlaw Pro Stock racer John David Duffie. It was Sears holding off Lenz in a good battle for the second heat race win, while Grace outran Rogers for the victory in the third heat. Borror beat fellow Oregon Pro Stock racer Scott Flowers for the fourth heat victory, and the final heat race win went to White ahead of Olschowka. The drivers competed for a nice trophy in the four lap A Dash, won by Borror ahead of White. The four lap B Dash win was earned by Donny Richardson ahead of James Flowers. The final starting spots in the 18 car Main Event were filled by the top drivers in the Last Chance Qualifier. Pearson won a near photo finish with Richardson for the victory in that race with Matt Harlow, Robert Mull and James Flowers completing the Top 5 in the 15 lapper.
The Hobby Stock drivers competed for a $1,000 first prize in their 15 lap Main Event, and it was Rocky Goetz out dueling defending race champion Randy Boyd in a close battlea. Jimmy Ray Huffman was also in the lead battle in third. Adam Gilmore was a solid fourth ahead of Shane Boyd, James Bonderer and Ronnie Goetz, who was the final lead lap finisher. Curtis Leslie, Bob Vaden and Dennis Crook completed the Top 10 in the 19 car field.
The Hobby Stocks ran four qualifying heat races, and Shayna Neiman outran Mark Hain to win the first 10 lap race. Alex Kniestedt outran Gilmore to win the second heat, while Rocky Goetz won the third heat by about half a lap in front of Jeff Tuttle. Randy Boyd also won his heat race by a wide margin in front of former Oregon Outlaw Pro Stock racer Dave Quick. Neiman won the four lap A Daah ahead of Kniestedt, and the four lap B Dash went to Shane Boyd.
The Nevada Pro Stock Association is already making plans to return to Cedarville Speedway for The Fourth Annual Gordon Russell Memorial Race in June of 2019. Stay tuned as more news on this race develops.
