Tanner Wins Tidal Wave 50 At Coos Bay Speedway

Coos Bay, Oregon...July 21-22...Joey Tanner scored the victory in the Tidal Wave 50 NASCAR Super Late Model Main Event Sunday afternoon at Coos Bay Speedway. The win paid Tanner $1,600 thanks to sponsorship from Knothole Market and Tom Elam. Tanner started back in the third row, and front row starter Trent Elliott charged into the early lead. It wasn't long before a battle began between Tanner and Elliot, and Tanner eventually moved into the lead. From there, Tanner sped home to the big win. Elliott settled for a $1,100 second with Elam an $850 third. Point leader Brody Montgomery, Daniel Deibele, McLain Beaudoin, Deven Brown, Thor Kristensen, Wayne Butler and Chris Ray rounded out the Top 10. Tanner and Elliot each won ten lap heat races and Diebele picked up five lap Trophy Dash honors.

A night earlier, Tanner collected the win in the 25 lap Main Event. Tanner started back in the fourth row for this race, and again Elliott found himself the early leader. The two had a good battle, but Tanner came out just ahead of Elliot at the checkered flag. Montgomery was a strong third, followed by Butler, Kristensen, Chris Ray, Beaudoin, Brown, Richard Wallace and Deibele. The preliminary events on Saturday we're the same as Sunday with Elliot and Tanner winning heat races and Diebele the five lap Trophy Dash winner.

Two-time champion Wayne Butler won the 20 lap Sportsman Late Model Main Event on Sunday. Butler won by not quite a straightaway ahead of point leader Dyllan Siewell and Tom Williams. Cottage Grove visitors Max Augustine and Justin Ryker rounded out the Top 5. Williams won the five lap Trophy Dash, while Butler claimed eight lap heat race honors. On Saturday, it was Siewell out-dueling Butler for his sixth 20 lap Main Event win of the season. Williams and Stacey Robison completed the finishing order. Butler won the heat race, and Williams captured his first of two Trophy Dash wins on the weekend.

Point leader Ken Fox boosted his Street Stock win total to seven by winning both 20 lap Main Events on the weekend. Still hungry for his first feature win of the season, Jeff Thurman gave Fox a good battle in Sunday's race as the only real contender for the win. However, Fox beat him back to the checkered flag in a photo finish for the victory. Daniel Land, David Smith and Justin Ryker rounded out the finishing order. Smith won the eight lap heat race, while Ryker claimed five lap Trophy Dash honors. Steve Dubisar won the dash and heat race on Saturday and was hoping for the sweep, but he fell out three laps into the race. Fox, Smith and Thurman had a close battle throughout the 20 lap distance, but Fox just beat Smith and Thurman back to the line for the win.

Fox won just about everything in the Mini Outlaw division during the weekend. He held off point leader Sam Talon to win the 20 lap Main Events on both Sunday and Saturday. Fox won both Trophy Dashes and his heat race on Sunday, while Talon won the eight lap heat race on Saturday.

Point leader Tyler Tullos and championship contender Hannah Robison picked up 20 lap Hornet Main Event wins during the weekend. On Sunday, Tullos claimed his fifth feature win of the season. Tullos raced into the lead in quick fashion, and he stretched his advantage to two-thirds of a lap ahead of a season-best second place effort for Matt Diller. April Warmack was the final lead lap finisher as Travis Pugh, Dusty Shingleton, Steven Parker and Leroy Rockwell completed the finishing order. This was also a clean sweep effort for Tullos as he won the five lap Trophy Dash and the eight lap heat race.

On Saturday night, Robison won a fierce battle with Tullos in the 25 lap Main Event. April Warmack was the final lead lap finisher in third. Braden Fugate finished fourth, followed by Shingleton, Ray Marshall, Chris Parker, Leroy Rockwell and Anthony Orlando. Rockwell and Robison won eight lap heat races, but Tullos held off Robison in the Trophy Dash to prevent her clean sweep attempt. Problems in the Trophy Dash on Sunday ended Robison's weekend prematurely and cost her third in the standings to Warmack.

Next Saturday night is Whelen Night at the races. There will be lucky rides for the kids, followed by an exciting lineup of racing that will include the popular Winged Sprint Cars, NASCAR Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Junior Stingers. Sprint Cars, Late Models Headline Whelen Night
At Coos Bay Speedway

Coos Bay, Oregon...The NASCAR Whelen All American Series continues Saturday night at Coos Bay Speedway. It's Whelen Night at the races, and there will also be Ride Alongs for the kids in the race cars. Featured divisions include the Winged Sprint Cars along with the NASCAR Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Junior Stingers.

After the last event, Brett Hulsey emerged with a 46 point lead in the Winged Sprint Car championship race. He's now being trailed by multi-time champion Dave May and reigning champion Lawrence Van Hoof. Van hoof is 48 points back in third. To date, the feature winners include Van Hoof, Ian Bandy and Aaron Miller. Other drivers to watch for this week include Donovan Prather, Kayla Green and Mike Crawford.

Super Late Model point leader Brody Montgomery gave a good accounting of himself at the two race Tidal Wave Weekend event with a pair of Top 5 finishes. The six-time feature winner holds a commanding 120 point lead over Chris Ray in the championship chase. Thor Kristensen continues to close in on Ray in the battle for second. Ray now leads the 2016 point runner-up by just 24 points. These three are anticipated this week along with Wayne Butler, Richard Wallace and Deven Brown.

Butler is doing double division duty, but the two-time Sportsman Late Model champion is trailing Dyllan Siewell in that division by 54 points after 12 races. Siewell is a six-time winner, while Butler has picked up five victories. Tom Williams has a solid hold on third in the standings. A week after picking up his best finish of the season in second, Charlie Withers had mechanical issues and has been missing from the past couple of races. He and Stacy Robison are other drivers who could be there this week.

Ken Fox enjoyed a strong weekend with two Street Stock Main Event wins last week. This puts the point leader's win total to seven victories as he holds a 90 point advantage over David Smith. Smith is still looking for his first feature win of the season as is Jeff Thurman, who holds onto third in the standings. Thurman had a strong showing last weekend with a pair of Top 3 finishes, and a win seems just around the corner for him. Other drivers to contend with include two time winners Steve Dubisar and Daniel Land.

Sam Talon has nearly clinched the Mini Outlaw championship with eight victories to his credit. However, Ken Fox forced him to settle for second twice last weekend. Fox was wheeling the car that John Henry won with earlier this season. Henry is currently third in the standings, and other drivers to watch for this week include two-time winner Jason Kellam, Tom Siewell and Carl Johnson.

Tyler Tullos picked up a win and a second last weekend, giving him a 92 point lead over one-time winner April Warmack. Warmack gained second in the standings following a non start on Sunday for Hannah Robison. The weekend was a mixed bag for Robison, who held off Tullos to win the Saturday feature. Four-time winner Braden Fugate maintains fourth in the standings by 22 points ahead of rookie Kris Parker. Other drivers to watch for this week include David Pellum, Chuck Peck, Leroy Rockwell and Andy Austin.

The Junior Stingers get their fifth event of the season, and it will be an opportunity for somebody to dethrone the four-time winner Griff Smith. The division offers the perfect opportunity for 11 to 14 year old drivers to go racing. Others who have been out there so far include Sebastion Freedle, Alex Butler and Hunter Berrier.
