Minster wins first ever, Rick Scheffler, Schmidt, & Koehler repeat

by J. Tienor
Manitowoc, WI. (June 24) – After a week of being abused by Mother Nature, fans and drivers alike were ready for some racing. Thanks to the efforts of the EWSC track crew, Big Brothers, Big Sisters Night at the Races went on as planned on a warm, overcast night at the Manitowoc County Expo Grounds.

Showing an invert of only 2, Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) and Gordie Seegert Jr. (Oostburg) would comprise the front row, with Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) and Tim Buhler (Glenbeulah) on Row 2. Seegert Jr. would get a huge jump on the start, grabbing the early lead, followed by the Schefflers, and Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls). A spin on Lap 4 by Eric Michaels would bring out the first caution, setting up a restart led by Seegert Jr., Russ, Rick, Schueffner, and Buhler. Side by side racing was the ticket as several drivers ran in tight groups. Rick Scheffler passed Seegert Jr. on Lap 7 and would race out to a huge lead, while Schueffner and Seegert Jr. would battle high and low lap after lap. Midway would show Rick, Schueffner, Seegert Jr., Buhler, and Russ in the top 5. A spin by Tom Naeyaert (Shawano) would bring out the final caution on Lap 20. Rick again led the restart, with Seegert and Schueffner right in his tracks, still battling right down to the checkered. Rick would roll through the checkers first, followed by Seegert Jr, Schueffner, Russ, Buhler, Justin Hirt (Tigerton), Jim Schmidt (Cleveland), Ron Stroika (Mukwonago), Randy Markwardt (Sheboygan), and Naeyaert. Big mover honors would go to Markwardt passing 5 cars and Schueffner passing 4.

With the invert wheel showing a ten, Tim Haddy (Waupan) and Scott Conger (Eagle) made up the front row, followed by Jay Riemer (Sheboygan Falls) and Eliot Kulow (Howards Grove). Immediately after the green flag, an incident in Turn 2 collected the machines of Haddy, Riemer, Randy Sippel (Elkhart Lake), and Lance Fassbender (Burnett). None of the drivers would be able to continue on, prompting some massive changes in the lineup on the next attempt to start the race. Conger would hold the lead on the first lap but would be overtaken by a streaking Jeremy Schultz (Beaver Dam) and Kyle Marten (Sheboygan Falls). These two drivers, joined shortly by Ben Schmidt (Howards Grove) would start to pull away from the field, until another yellow on Lap 6 for Tony Wondra (Campbellsport) suffering a mechanical issue in Turn 4. The restart lineup would be, Schultz, Marten, Schmidt, Danny Schlafer (Sussex), and Conger. Schultz would jump back out to a lead, while Schmidt would work his way around Marten and set his sights on the leader. A long run of green flag racing produced some interesting lines around the track, as Schultz and Schmidt continued to battle at at the front, while Scotty Thiel (Sheboygan), Paul Pokorski (West Bend), and Al Schlafer (Sussex) worked their way through the pack. Schmidt would get around Schultz at Lap 24 for the the lead, and a spinning Marten would draw the yellow at Lap 27. Schmidt, Thiel, Schultz, Al and Danny Schlafer would lead the final restart, with Schmidt holding off Schultz for the win, and Thiel, Al Schlafer, Pokorski, Danny Schlafer, Conger, Kulow, Marten, and Jeff Wilke (Genoa) would round out the top 10. Pokorski would take hard charger honors passing 10 cars, while Al Schlafer passed 8.

The Grand National Feature rolled out with Larry Zirbel (Iron Ridge) and Donny Kulow (Plymouth) leading the field with Steven Weber (Plymouth) and Brad Juckem (Chilton) making up the second row. And this is where everyone began looking for a full moon. On Lap 1 an incident involving Juckem, Brad Lubach (Kiel), Kevin Lubach (Elkhart Lake), and Mark Kuhfuss (Sheboygan Falls) which wrinkled some body panels but also raised some tempers. Zirbel, Mark Fieber (Cascade), Weber, and Brian Gilles (Plymouth) led the field to the restart. Kuhfuss would loop his ride in Turn 2 bringing out the yellow at Lap 3, setting up a restart of Zirbel, Fieber, Kulow, Gilles, and Brett Wenzel (Manitowoc). The first of 2 cautions on lap 6 involved the Chris Gilson (Elkhart Lake) and Wes Baumann (Elkhart Lake) resulting in a DQ for Gilson and Baumann retiring his ride. On the restart yellow would fly again for another incident between Juckem and Kevin Lubach, with the extra-curricular resulting in a DQ for Juckem and Lubach out for mechanicals. Zirbel led the now time limit race back to green, and with some furious action in the final 2 laps, Ryan Minster (Sheboygan) would win his first EWSC Grand National feature, followed in by Kulow, Fieber, Gilles, Zirbel, Matt Yancey (Sheboygan), Wenzel, Scott Houpt (Belgium), Dan Schumacher (Milwaukee), and Kevin Naidl (Cato). Big movers for the race were Kuhfuss picking up 7 and Yancey and Minster getting 5 each.
