Merfield goes green to checkers in Late Models at Independence Motor Speedway

Independence, Iowa – A great field of cars took to the track at the Independence Motor Speedway.

Kirk Fauser scored the IMCA Stock Car win. Paul Fauser held the early lead but a caution just a lap later into the event Kirk powered his way from his fourth place position into the lead. Fauser began to pull away from the field as Roger Ciesielski made his way into second. Tom Schmitt began to close in on Ciesielski just passed the halfway point. Jarod Weepie who was running fourth began to feel the pressure from Dave Stricker as the top two began to advance away from the field. Fauser held off Ciesielski to score his first victory. Weepie and Sean Johnson followed.

The IMCA Late Models have been consistent for the last three weeks going green to checker. Luke Merfeld topped the 25 lap feature. Merfeld took over the lead just one lap into the event as Travis Smock moved into second. The top two began to pull away from the field as Joel Brasch and Dain Sires were side-by-side for third. Greg Kastli had made his way into the top five with Curt Martin following. By lap ten Merfeld had closed in on lapped traffic allowing Smock to close in. Kastli had moved into third place over Brasch as the halfway point was reached. Brasch wasn’t going to make it easy as he began to fight back. Merfeld held on for the win with Smock, Brasch and Kastli following.

Chris Wiltse scored the IMCA Hobby Stock victory. Jeremy Floyd took the early lead but it didn’t take long for Jamie Whitaker to move into the top spot. Whitaker now had to contend with Dave Wheeler and Floyd. The field began to bunch from second to seventh as the cars were three-wide. Wiltse had begun to move through the field as he made his way into second along with Justin Lichty. With the green in the air the field seemed to be in momentum as Wiltse shot low on Whitaker for the top spot. Wiltse powered to the victory. Whitaker, Lichty and Vince Buchholz followed.

Justin O’Brien scored the IMCA Modified victory. O’Brien took over the top spot and began to pull away from the field. Jerry King moved into second with Ronn Lauritzen following. The top three had a few car lengths over the rest of the field. O’Brien quickly reeled in lapped traffic as Darin Duffy moved into fourth. A momentary red on the track bunched the field allowed Duffy to shoot low and into third. The halfway point Duffy was on the move using the high line passing King for second. O’Brien had checked out as there was five to go. Duffy began to close in on O’Brien with the green flying. O’Brien kept his distance as he scored the victory. Duffy, King and Lauritzen followed.

It seemed as Danny Dvorak had the win in the IMCA SportMods but it was Tyler Droste who took the checkers first. Kim Siems held the early lead with Matthew McCahen in second. Dvorak used the low groove and moved into second with Droste following. Dvorak worked under Siems for the lead as Droste began to use the high line. Dvorak began to advance himself from the field with Droste moving into second. Jim Buhlman had made his way into the top four. The white flag waved as Dvorak seemed to be on the way to the victory but Dvorak found himself falling to the rear as he spun just passed the corner. Droste went off the score the win, Siems, Buhlman and Ray Lundry followed.
